A codice Fiscale works a bit like the American Social
Security Number. A combination of numbers and letters
is formed by combining your name, gender, birth date,
and birth place. Unlike the American system, two people
can have the same code, if they data is similar. If
one doesn't pay bills, another one with the same code
will probably have problems.
In Italy, you are your codice fiscale, and you need
this number to open bank accounts, rent an apartment,
buy a vehicle, get a telephone line, and work.
Since the codice fiscale can be calculated from individual
data, you would think you don't need to sign up for
one. Wrong. This is Italy, so don't expect practicality.
In any case there are programs online to help you figure
out anyone's codice fiscale.
How to get it
In order to get your number and card you need to bring
a valid document and residence permit to Uffici distrettuali
delle Imposte Dirette. The card is sent to your
home a few weeks after your request. If you register
the birth of a child, his or her card will automatically
be sent to your place of residence.
Easier
Go to a good agenzia pratiche (private agencies
that handle bureaucratic needs) and for a small extra
fee you'll get your codice fiscale in one day, without
hassles and lines.
