“Agatha Christan: Delitto sulle nevi” (Agata Christian: Crime on the Snow) arrives during a flourishing era for Italian comedy, riding the wave of the massive box-office success recently seen with Checco Zalone. The undisputed lead of the film is detective Agatha Christan—or rather, Christan Agatha, as he pointedly clarifies throughout the movie—portrayed by the timeless Christian De Sica. His character is as brilliant as he is cynical, infused with a sharp wit and punctuated by the iconic Roman interjections that have defined the actor’s career.
This latest venture plunges the audience into a complex, original mystery: a web of intrigue and secrets hidden within the walls of an ancient manor, the site of a grisly murder. Interacting with De Sica through a masterclass in misunderstandings and comedic timing is a prestigious ensemble cast, including co-star Lillo, Ilaria Spada, Paolo Calabresi, and a surprising turn by trap icon Tony Effe.
While the film shares part of its cast with the previous “Cortina Express,” director Eros Puglielli clarified that this work represents a deliberate departure from the traditional Cinepanettone formula:
“I wouldn’t call it a traditional holiday comedy. It’s not a film with a thin plot and scattered sketches. Here, the comedy and the mystery plot are intertwined; they move in perfect synchronicity. It’s a different model—a comedy that leverages the structural integrity of a whodunit.”
The film appears to break with past traditions in favor of a more sophisticated and structured comedy. Moving beyond the stereotypical tropes of Italian slapstick, the movie explores new narrative paths outside of the usual iconic Italian locales. This is an experimental direction De Sica first touched upon in 2019 with “Sono solo fantasmi,” though it remained a standalone attempt until now.
“Agatha Christan: Delitto sulle nevi” is a daring work. It abandons the safety of traditional farce to bet on a solid narrative framework that balances irony with enigma. Naturally, the “earthy” humor characteristic of De Sica’s persona remains, as do the classic gags of national comedy, but here they are more measured, serving the plot and the overall production design.
Furthermore, the film aims to capture a younger demographic—audiences weary of recycled tropes—by blending veteran cinema icons with contemporary pop culture figures. When asked about the potential birth of a new franchise, Puglielli remarked:
“We certainly hope so. It’s a genre that is as fun to create as it is to watch. Personally, I’m a huge fan of this style, which is exactly why I wanted to bring it to life.”
