Many of the young musicians who now perform in Europe’s most prestigious concert halls share an important chapter in their artistic journey: the Campus delle Arti in Bassano del Grappa.
It was here that internationally acclaimed performers such as Federico Colli, Erica Piccotti, Gloria Campaner, Simone Rubino, and Ettore Pagano met distinguished teachers, fellow musicians, and opportunities that helped shape their artistic careers. More than just a summer music program, the Campus has become a place where talent is nurtured and given the opportunity to flourish.
This year, the Campus celebrates its 20th anniversary, confirming its reputation as one of Italy’s most respected and enduring institutions for advanced musical training.
The project was founded in the early 2000s by pianist Angela Chiofalo, professor at Rome’s Santa Cecilia Conservatory, with a vision that was both simple and ambitious: to create an environment where artistic excellence would go hand in hand with genuine care for each student.
Over the years, that vision has grown into an international network bringing together professors from some of Europe’s leading conservatories and music academies, from London and Berlin to Amsterdam and Paris, transforming Bassano del Grappa into a meeting point for hundreds of talented young musicians from around the world.
The figures reflect the remarkable growth of the initiative. Since 2004, more than 1,800 students from Europe, Asia, and the United States have attended the Campus. A total of 353 scholarships have been awarded through financial aid and merit-based recognition, while the artistic program has produced 240 concerts, including 60 international performances, as well as 50 professional recordings that have enabled outstanding students to begin building their professional portfolios.
Yet the true value of the Campus extends far beyond the numbers.
Its greatest strength lies in its commitment to supporting young musicians long after the courses have ended. Through partnerships with the Italian Cultural Institutes, concert organizations, and international institutions, many students have made their professional debut in prestigious venues such as Salle Cortot in Paris, transforming years of study into real career opportunities.
This ability to create lasting connections is the hallmark of Angela Chiofalo’s vision: building bridges between generations of musicians, institutions, and countries. It is a network developed over two decades that continues to open doors for emerging artists.
International collaboration has been part of the Campus since its earliest years. As early as 2007, its youth orchestra embarked on a 13-concert tour in China under the baton of Maestro Shambadal. Today, the Campus collaborates with institutions in France, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia, and, for the first time this year, Japan.
Meanwhile, every summer Bassano del Grappa is transformed into an open-air music laboratory. For several days, classrooms, theatres, and cultural venues across the city come alive with different languages, instruments, rehearsals, concerts, and artistic exchanges, creating an atmosphere that goes far beyond that of a traditional summer academy.
The celebrations for the twentieth edition will culminate during the closing weekend. On Saturday, July 25, competition prizes will be awarded, while Sunday, July 26, will offer audiences the opportunity to experience the artistic achievements of the students alongside performances by their professors.
Twenty years after its foundation, Campus delle Arti continues to demonstrate that investing in education means investing in the future of music—and that a city like Bassano del Grappa can inspire artistic journeys that ultimately reach concert stages across the world.

A contributor to various publications, he also appears on television and radio programs and has more than 100 publications to his name. Throughout his career, he has served as a trusted physician to prominent figures in Italian culture, entertainment, and politics.
