The major exhibition-event “Franco Battiato. Another Life” has opened at the MAXXI in Rome, celebrating the multifaceted genius of the Sicilian singer-songwriter five years after his passing. An ambitious and immersive exhibition project, curated by Giorgio Calcara with Grazia Cristina Battiato, co-produced by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the MAXXI, in collaboration with the Fondazione Franco Battiato ETS, the show will remain open until April 26, 2026 in the museum’s Extra space.
The exhibition is not merely a tribute to the great artist, but also a journey into the human, philosophical, artistic, and spiritual dimensions of the Sicilian songwriter, who traversed genres, languages, and disciplines, becoming one of the most influential figures in contemporary Italian culture.
A Journey Between East and West

The exhibition path, marked by thematic panels, archival materials, installations, and testimonials, retraces Battiato’s artistic journey from the mid-1960s to the present day. A dedicated section focuses on the dialogue between East and West, one of the foundational themes of Battiato’s artistic and spiritual research.
From the 1980s onward, as noted in the exhibition panels, Battiato’s artistic discourse becomes enriched with esoteric elements, references to the Mediterranean and the Middle East, ancient myths, and mystical suggestions, which become distinctive features of his poetic style. His lyrics are described as “initiatory journeys,” inviting reflection on the universe and inner knowledge.

The exhibition highlights the decisive influence of the thought of Gurdjieff, the renowned Russian philosopher of Greek origin, who represented a fundamental spiritual reference for the songwriter, as well as Western Sufism, which influenced his musical style through symbolic references to the whirling dervishes and the search for the “permanent center of gravity.”
From Sicily to Milan: The Birth of a Singer-Songwriter
Another section traces Battiato’s move from Sicily to Milan in the 1960s and the subsequent beginning of an artistic career which, through his encounter with Giorgio Gaber, brought him to Milan and placed him firmly within the world of entertainment.
This journey continues with the story of his return to Sicily, to Milo, where Battiato withdrew after the success of the 1980s to devote himself to meditation, study, painting, and spiritual research. Villa Grazia is described as a place of artistic creation and contemplation, set in the landscape of Mount Etna, where the artist cultivated philosophical, religious, and literary interests, surrounded by a vast library and a domestic environment that was essential and contemplative.

Like a Diamond: The Master and the Man
In the section entitled Like a Diamond, visitors encounter a portrait of Battiato the man: reserved, generous, ironic, a spiritual teacher despite himself, capable of influencing generations of artists and of working with the most important figures in the Italian cultural panorama. Particular attention is given to his collaboration with philosopher Manlio Sgalambro, which marked some of the most intense pages of contemporary music and thought.
Battiato’s Cinema
Space is also devoted to his cinematic work, beginning with Perdutoamor and continuing with Musikanten and Nothing Is as It Seems, up to Crossing the Bardo, a documentary film. The exhibition recalls how cinema represented for Battiato an extension of his artistic vision.
From Avant-Garde to Pop
The exhibition concludes with the pop consecration of the 1980s and the albums The Era of the White Boar and La voce del padrone, which represent the transition from radical experimentation to mass popularity without ever renouncing culture. The exhibition recalls how Battiato succeeded in combining mass culture with research, anticipating future trends and redefining the concept of the singer-songwriter.
Another Life is an immersive exhibition that goes beyond biography to offer a complex and intimate portrait of the artist: musician, poet, philosopher, painter, and filmmaker. It is a journey through time and spirit, guiding visitors toward a reflection on music, identity, and life, within a path dedicated to an artist who continues to influence the cultural present.
