Massive-Attack_Roma_Blue-Brexit
Gran finale del Just Music Festival, nella serata conclusiva del 26 luglio 2016, i Massive Attack presso la cavea dell’Auditorium parco della Musica.

 

Quando si decide di andare ad un concerto dei Massive Attack bisogna sapere due cose: che sarà breve, ma molto, molto intenso. Ed infatti anche questa volta i nostri non si sono smentiti suonando per poco più di un’ora alla Cavea dell’Auditorium di Roma dove hanno presentato il loro show fatto di musica densa e potente, un videowall a led di forte impatto visivo ed un palco essenziale.
massiveattackI Massive Attack, presenti sulle scene da circa 25 anni, sono un collettivo musicale nato a Bristol nei tardi anni ‘80. I fondatori Robert “3D” Del Naja, Daddy G Marshall e Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles rappresentano il cuore della band che negli anni si è circondata di diversi musicisti, che man mano si sono alternati sia in studio che sul palco. I tre (oggi orfani di Vowles) hanno collaborato con artisti del calibro di Madonna, Sinead O’ Connor, Tracey Thorne, Tricky e moltissimi altri, imponendosi sulla scena underground già col primo meraviglioso album Blue Lines del 1991 e aprendo di fatto l’epoca d’oro del Trip Hop britannico, definizione di genere che da sempre è accettata mal volentieri dalla band di Bristol più orientata ad ampliare i concetti che a etichettarli. Il concerto si apre con la ruvida United Snakes che accompagna l’ingresso di Del Naja e Marshall.
Massive-Attack_Roma_B&W-STageMentre i musicisti sul palco si sono già posizionati dietro a due batterie, una chitarra, un basso, tastiere synth e scratch console, ecco che il videowall spara parole e nomi a raffica (“Ukip. Democratic. Gucci. Pizza. Poverty. Labour…”) Subito dopo parte The Himn Of The Big Wheel con il ciondolante Horace Andy alla voce. Il pezzo fa parte di Mezzanine, album del ‘97, è uno dei brani che si distacca un po’ dalle sonorità cupe che spesso vengono espresse nella musica dei Massive Attack.
Ma è con la successiva Risingson che l’atmosfera si fa subito ipnotica e sembra aprirsi un mondo nuovo fatto di oscurità e suoni imprevedibili.

Del Naja rappa sussurrando e il resto della band alza un muro di suoni distorti che viene scagliato verso la platea con effetti destabilizzanti. La scaletta prosegue con ritmo serrato e senza esitazioni e la serata si tinge di rosso intenso, di pensieri destrutturati e di domande retoriche che passano sul video-wall senza soluzione di continuità. La video scenografia si fa carico di esaltare i contenuti dei pezzi che seguono; Take It There, Inerthia Creeps, Angel, con immagini e frasi che ricordano eventi più o meno recenti quali il golpe in Turchia, la morte di Giulio Regeni, quella di Carlo Giuliani, il flusso migratorio umano e varie altre follie che caratterizzano il nostro tempo.
Poi è la volta di Eurochild con scontati riferimenti alla recente e famigerata questione Brexit, quindi Girl I Love You ci offre un elenco interminabile di nomi più o meno noti ( da Karl Marx a Marlene Dietrich, da Edward Snowden a Freud ) che scorrono sul muro a led. La sensazione è quella di trovarsi a respirare l’aria densa e pungenete di un laboratorio segreto dove in un seminterrato, nascosti nell’ombra, operano chimici, scienziati ed alchimisti che improvvisano miscele esplosive e solventi corrosivi. L’esperimento è audace ma pare funzionare. Le luci del palco si mischiano alle distorsioni elettroniche, alle animazioni digitali, alle percussioni che diventano sempre più “robuste”, al rap cortese dei vocalist ed ancora alla voce di Deborah Miller che esegue una Safe From Harm in modo dolce e malinconico. Massive-Attack_Roma_Red-StageCi voleva dopo tanto furore. Quello proposto è un live coinvolgente che confonde, quella dei Massive Attack è una musica che trascina inesorabilmente nelle profondità animiche e porta all’introspezione, alla discesa verticale ma nello stesso tempo permette di spostarsi in ampiezza grazie alle aperture sonore fatte di evocazioni orientali, voci soul, bassi rotolanti e chitarre dal suono rozzo, sporco, punk. Lo show si esaurice in fretta ed è un peccato perché, come detto, è davvero intenso. Riusciamo a strappare l’ultima Unfinished Sympathy con la Miller in stato di grazia assoluta. Massive-Attack_Roma_EndIl fuoco dei Massive Attack si consuma velocemente e la fiamma esplosiva generata durante il live lascia il posto ad un piccolo focolaio che da vita allo spettacolo pirotecnico finale, allungando un po’ il brodo e facendo rimanere tutti ai propri posti, lasciandoci comunque quel senso di incompiuto che dopo un concerto come questo non dovrebbe proprio essere contemplato. Nonostante un po’ di delusione per i soli 13 brani e la striminzita oretta e mezza, ci rimane addosso la sensazione chiara di quando si è assistito a qualcosa che ci ha scossi e confusi, trascinati a fondo e scagliati lontano. Sensazione di disorientamento, che persiste anche mentre ce ne torniamo verso luoghi più sicuri.
