SHORT THEATRE 9 – THE REVOLUTION OF WORDS

SHORT THEATRE 9 – LA RIVOLUZIONE DELLE PAROLESHORT THEATRE 9 – LA RIVOLUZIONE DELLE PAROLE

LA RIVOLUZIONE DELLE PAROLE (THE REVOLUTION OF WORDS) is a chance for
investigating the mechanisms that can revolutionise our time and a crisis now so deep to
be forgotten. Language is a land where to build a new imaginary able to hold out against
the present and to create the future, here and now. It is a task that cannot be postponed.
We have been ready for a long time and yet no one ever asks us to really be it. Let’s try to
understand whether we can prove to be ready without being summoned. Let’s discover
now what we are able to do, what we are able to say.
Who has the right and who has the duty to speak? Which words can describe our near
future (the one that will happen and the one we want)? Is there space for a new rhetoric?
What are the unspeakable things, the indescribable images that are nonetheless necessary?
In “Julius Caesar”, Cinna (not the conspirator but the useless poet) says that there are
words for things still unknown to us, words that can change the world. To celebrate the
450thanniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, we will wonder about the role of intellectuals
and artists and the meaning of their words, a weak and sometimes dark meaning that
perhaps is still undefeated.

FABRIZIO ARCURI

Every year a community of artists, spectators and operators meet in a special time and
space, Short Theatre. A community founded on words, views, contact and the right
distance. You can take part in a performance, a workshop or a conversation. Short Theatre
is a chance for thinking and talking, for explaining a problem and investigating its
consequences. Short Theatre is the right moment for a question and a few answers, and
then for more questions.
This year Short Theatre presents projects that will show the audience the heart of theatre-
making: workshop open to the public, non-show performances where the spectator is also
the performer, shows with a peculiar set and dramaturgy that invade and get invaded by
reality. With the support of European networks and Cultural Institutes, this edition will host
even more international artists and more countries will be represented. Once again, the
theme is contemporary dramaturgy, with a special focus on choreography and stage
presence.
This year’s edition will take many forms: performances, meetings, training courses, dj sets
and concerts, installations and open conversations.
Short Theatre does not represent generations or trends, but every year it tries to start a
conversation and describe an idea of theatre-making, offering a chance to conquer new
frontiers, once again and always conquerable.

IS LANGUAGE A LOST BATTLE BY NOW?
ARE WORDS STRONG ENOUGH TO “MAKE” A REVOLUTION?
4 conversations about the chance to “express” change and future.
Are there really words “to do things” with? Do words still play a political role? If so, what
are these words? Can language still consciously host and manipulate words? Does language still have an incisive and revolutionary potential? These are the questions that will inspire our conversations. curated by Graziano Graziani and Attilio Scarpellini

Revelation and Simulation – a photographic project by Ilaria Scarpa
set: Wàla Lab
After having portrayed the artists of Santarcangelo•14 and documentary filmmakers of
Bellaria Film Festival#32, Ilaria Scarpa will contribute to Short Theatre with a photographic
set created with the help of Wàla Lab fashion designers.
Short Theatre artists will be portrayed at the same time as both “performers” and
“characters”. As they pose, they will instantaneously create another body and a mask. A
face is spontaneity and deceit at the same time, who poses “transforms himself in advance
into an image” (R.Barthes)

ILARIA SCARPA
born in Rimini, Ilaria studied photography in Rome and is a stage and
reportage photographer. Among her collaborations, Emilia Romagna Teatro and Teatro di
Roma. She has been the official photographer of the last three editions of Festival di
Santarcangelo dei teatri. Her blog is ilariascarpa.wordpress.com
Wàla “Wearable Action Lab” is a workshop, an atelier, a place where passion for
experiments and pragmatism happily coexist, where our daily gestures are studied and
transformed into changeable clothes and accessories that describe our unpredictable and
uncertain way to move, act and live.
Because clothing requires a blend of dynamism, function and style.

Stage photo-graphy. Theatre as a civil photographic poetics – workshop held by Futura
Tittaferrante 10-12 September
During the workshop, the strategies devised by Futura will be analysed to explore the
relationship between theatre and photography, the photographer’s inner life and the world
he observes through the camera.
The stage photographer is a human being, he has emotional reactions, he is a spectator and
a narrator at the same time, as he takes a picture he simultaneously creates and
interprets. How do you approach a live performance? Is it possible to immortalize it?
