The great success in visitor numbers has led to the extension of Steve McCurry’s exhibition in Montefalco until July 5. From December 2025 to May 3, 2026, a total of 13,217 visitors were recorded, compared to 3,690 in the same period last year (+258%).
An exhibition that moves, surprises, and tells the story of Umbria’s beauty through a unique and powerful perspective.
Great appreciation and steadily increasing attendance have led to the extension of the exceptional exhibition by Steve McCurry in Montefalco. From December 2025 through the May 1-3 holiday weekend in 2026, a total of 13,217 visitors filled the halls of the San Francesco Museum Complex to admire the evocative photographs of one of the most renowned photographers in the world. This figure is significantly higher than the same period last year, when 3,690 visitors were recorded, marking an overall वृद्धि of approximately +258%. The exhibition “Steve McCurry – Umbria” will remain open to visitors until July 5, 2026.
Conceived and curated by Biba Giacchetti, the exhibition has been widely appreciated from the very beginning for its ability to reach people on a deeply emotional level. More than ten years after the first exhibition “Sensational Umbria”, the celebrated American photographer Steve McCurry has returned to portray this land through sixty carefully selected photographs, including iconic images and previously unseen works presented to the public for the first time. From Montefalco to Gubbio, passing through Foligno, Bevagna, Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Spoleto, Trevi, Lake Trasimeno and many unexpected places, as well as major events such as Umbria Jazz, the Quintana of Foligno, the Festa dei Ceri, the Gaite of Bevagna and the Festival dei Due Mondi.
Visitors, both local and from outside the region, have chosen Montefalco as a cultural tourism destination, drawn by this compelling exhibition. Many young people have attended, eager to discover Umbria through McCurry’s lens, and numerous visitors returned to the San Francesco Museum Complex specifically for the exhibition. The exhibition has also received significant attention from regional and national media.
The guided tours dedicated to primary and secondary schools from the area and across Umbria have also been very successful, along with visits from Erasmus students hosted by the Montefalco Comprehensive Institute and other regional institutions. Various groups from inclusive day centers from the local area and from Perugia, Terni, and Amelia were also welcomed, for a total of approximately 750 participants.
To further immerse visitors in the places and beauty captured by McCurry, special openings and side events were organized, all of which were well attended: an event organized by the Ordre International des Anysetiers, the guided tour and tasting “Sagrantino meets Steve McCurry” in collaboration with the Sagrantino Wine Route, art therapy workshops, and a concert and workshop with A.P.I. inclusive performative actions around the senses. Over 550 exhibition catalogues were sold.
Steve McCurry explains the reason behind the exhibition:
«I felt it was time to return with an exhibition to a place that had given me so much. The years spent working on Sensational Umbria were filled with warmth, curiosity, and unexpected discoveries. Coming back to Montefalco with well-known images and a series of new ones felt like closing a circle or perhaps opening a new one. There was still much to say about the spirit of this region, and I wanted to share it.»
The exhibition ticket includes access to the San Francesco Museum Complex, featuring the beautiful Church of San Francesco, the Civic Art Gallery, the archaeological section, the Franciscan cellars, and the Sagrantino Museum.
The exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Montefalco and the Umbria Region, with the patronage of the Umbria Region, the Province of Perugia, ANCI, and the Union of Municipalities Terre dell’Olio e del Sagrantino, in collaboration with Orion57. Project partners include the Umbria Chamber of Commerce, the Cassa di Risparmio di Foligno Foundation, the Cassa di Risparmio di Spoleto Foundation, the Perugia Foundation, the Montefalco Wine Protection Consortium, and the Sagrantino Wine Route. Organization is managed by Maggioli Cultura e Turismo.
Opening hours: May-June: every day except Tuesday, 10:30 am to 6:00 pm. July: every day, 10:30 am to 7:00 pm. Last entry is half an hour before closing. Special openings will be scheduled during events and holidays.
