Il Centro Habitat Mediterraneo Lipu (CHM) si trova alla foce del Tevere, nei pressi dell’Idroscalo di Ostia. È un centro naturalistico realizzato in una zona precedentemente occupata da una discarica a cielo aperto, tristemente nota per essere stata teatro della morte di Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Il centro è nato come proposta alternativa ad un devastante sceanario che si prospettava come una sorta di zoo-lager per animali che avrebbe distrutto l’intera foce del Tevere. A seguito di una forte battaglia ambientalista portata avanti dalla Lega Italiana Prootezione Uccelli (LIPU) di Ostia a metà anni ’90, anche attraverso la raccolta di oltre 7.000 firme a sostegno del progetto, è stato successivamente integrato dalle pubbliche amministrazioni al nuovo Porto turistico di Roma, con importanti funzioni di mitigazione e compensazione ambientale.
Un sentiero natura consente di raggiungere tre ampi capanni in legno per l’osservazione degli uccelli con strutture dedicate alla fotografia naturalistica e al bird watching, mentre un’accogliente aula didattica all’aperto e l’ampio centro visite Mario Pastore ospitano iniziative culturali, di sensibilizzazione e ricerca, oltre alle classiche iniziative di volontariato della LIPU.

Qui il 2 novembre 1975 Pier Paolo Pasolini trovò la morte ed il monumento realizzato in suo ricordo, circondato da rifiuti, ha rappresentato per anni il simbolo del degrado dell’area.
Oggi il luogo della scomparsa di Pasolini è stato completamente recuperato ed attrezzato a giardino letterario, mentre più recentemente hanno visto la luce i Parchi Letterari® Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Habitat

Oggi il Centro Habitat Mediterraneo di Ostia è in fase di ulteriore espansione,  comprende una ricostruzione ambientale di uno stagno costiero, nel quale, tra una lussureggiante vegetazione acquatica, ripariale e di macchia, sono già state censite oltre 200 specie di uccelli, con specie nidificanti rare come l’airone rosso e che rappresenta la più importante colonia del Lazio, facilmente osservabile, tra gli altri, insieme a tuffetto, tarabusino, schiribilla, tarabuso, falco di palude, cavaliere d’Italia e a molti limicoli ed anatre, come la rara moretta tabaccata.

Servizi e strutture

Un sentiero natura consente di raggiungere tre ampi capanni in legno per l’osservazione degli uccelli e strutture dedicate alla fotografia naturalistica, mentre un’aula didattica all’aperto ed il centro visite Mario Pastore ospitano iniziative culturali, di sensibilizzazione e ricerca, oltre alle tante iniziative di volontariato della Lipu Ostia (tra cui il primo soccorso di centinaia di animali selvatici l’anno).
Il luogo della scomparsa di Pasolini, dopo decenni di degrado, è stato recuperato ed attrezzato a giardino letterario, mentre più recentemente è stato istituito il Parco Letterario Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Da visitare in zona

Il centro storico liberty del Lido di Ostia e la Riserva Naturale Statale Litorale Romano: macchia mediterranea, ampie pinete e bosco misto, vegetazione umida e dunale, ambienti fluviali insieme a vaste estensioni di prato e terreni coltivati caratterizzano la riserva insieme ad un eccezionale patrimonio storico-archeologico (a soli 10 minuti dall’Oasi si trovano gli Scavi ed il borgo di Ostia Antica). All’interno della Riserva si trova l’Oasi Lipu di Castel di Guido.

Apertura al pubblico
Il centro visite è aperto nelle giornate di lunedi-mercoledi-venerdi-sabato dalle ore 9 alle ore 13. Il sabato dalle 9 alle 13 vi è libero accesso all’oasi, mentre, previa prenotazione, sono possibili visite guidate durante tutti i giorni della settimana.

Come arrivare
Da Roma, in automobile percorrere il Grande Raccordo Anulare uscita n. 28 Ostia – Via del Mare, prendere il lungomare di Ostia girando a destra (verso nord), percorrerlo tutto fino alla fine e girare obbligatoriamente a destra su Via Carlo Avegno. Percorrere la via fino alla fine e girare a sinistra su Via dell’Idroscalo e dopo la seconda rotatoria girare a sinistra entrando nel parcheggio del Porto Turistico di Roma. Nel parcheggio, il Centro Visite Mario Pastore è uno chalet in legno.
