E’ gia’ passato un anno dalla scomparsa del grande George Michael.
Le sue canzoni hanno accompagnato intere generazioni e oggi quell’interprete cosi’ straordinario della musica e cosi’ eclettico, ci manca terribilmente. Con circa 100 milioni di dischi venduti,[2] è uno degli artisti musicali britannici di maggior successo, nella madrepatria e all’estero, molto famoso anche negli Stati Uniti, dove è seguito da oltre un milione di fans. Originariamente membro del duo pop Wham!, si è poi lanciato in una fortunata carriera da solista iniziata nel 1987 con l’album Faith (vincendo 2 Grammy Award negli USA e la relativa tournée mondiale).
Ma ripercorriamo insieme le tappe piu’ salienti della sua carriera artistica e della sua vita…
Nasce Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou il 25 giugno 1963 a Bushey (Inghilterra). Il padre, ristoratore, è di origine greco-cipriote.

E’ il 1975 quando nel quartiere di North London, alla “Bushey Meads Comprehensive School” conosce Andrew Ridgely.

Quattro anni più tardi (5 novembre 1979) insieme a Paul Ridgely, fratello di Andrew, David Mortimer e Andrew Leaver, nasce il gruppo “The Executive”; provano a fare musica ska senza però ottenere molta fortuna.

Il 24 marzo 1982 George Michael e Andrew incidono un demo sotto il nome di “Wham!”. Il demo li porta a firmare un contratto con la Innervisions. Il 28 maggio viene pubblicato in Inghilterra il loro primo singolo, “Wham Rap!”; sarà con “Young guns go for it” che il duo vedrà numeri di vendita significativi. I singoli che seguono sono “Bad Boys”, che George Michael propone come il manifesto della sua generazione, e la notissima “Club Tropicana”.

L’ultimo album degli “Wham!” è “The edge of heaven”. Il 13 novembre 1985 si sciolgono; il 28 giugno 1986 il concerto “The Final” al Wembley Stadium riunisce 72.000 persone, che assistono commosse all’ultimo capitolo del duo.
George Mihcael invece affina il suo stile ed aggiunge elementi di black music alla sua musica. Nel 1987 George Michael è il primo vocalist maschio in assoluto a duettare con Aretha Franklin. Inizia quindi i suoi viaggi tra Londra e la Danimarca dove registra il suo primo album solista “Faith”, che venderà oltre 14 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo. Il primo singolo estratto è il controverso “I want your sex”.

Nel 1988 partecipa al “Nelson Mandela Freedom Concert” a Wembley. L’immagine dell’artista intanto sembra essere considerata più della musica: nel 1990 mette in atto un cambiamento totale. Registra “Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1” decide di non apparire in copertina, di non apparire in video e di non concedere interviste. Nel video di “Praying for time” compare solo il testo della canzone; in quello “Freedom ’90” appaiono modelle all’epoca semi-sconosciute come Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell e Cindy Crawford.

Dal 1991 in poi collabora con vari artisti tra i quali Elton John, con cui canta allo stadio di Wembley un’indimenticabile “Don’t let the sun go down on me”. L’anno seguente, il 20 aprile, partecipa al “Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert” dove duetta con Lisa Stansfield in “These are the days of our lives”; stupisce quando interpreta “Somebody to love”.

Manifesta ancora il suo impegno per la lotta contro l’AIDS suonando d’avanti alla principessa del Galles nel “Concerto Della Speranza” trasmesso in mondovisione, servito per raccogliere fondi e sensibilizzare l’opinione pubblica sulla malattia.

Nel 1992 esce “Red Hot + Dance” un progetto con scopi di beneficenza che contiene canzoni di artisti come Madonna, Seal oltre che George Michael.

Inizia poi una battaglia legale per liberarsi dal contratto che lo lega all’etichetta CBS/Sony. L’opinione pubblica considera il comportamento del cantante come snobistico. La guerra in atto contro la casa discografica trascina George Michael in un lungo silenzio.

Finalmente nel 1996 dopo la agognata separazione dall’etichetta Epic, esce il tanto atteso album “Older” con la Virgin.

L’8 ottobre 1996 esegue un unplugged su MTV che incanta il pubblico. Dopo l’album “Older” la felicità e i successi di George Michael possono essere considerati una rinascita. Il momento migliore della sua vita viene rovinato dalla scomparsa della madre a causa di un tumore. A lei dedica “Waltz away dreaming”, straordinario saluto “recitato” insieme a Toby Bourke.

Alla morte di Lady Diana, a cui è legato, le regala “You have been loved”.

Esce poi la raccolta “Ladies and Gentleman” che contiene l’inedita “Outside”, canzone con cui George Michael dichiara esplicitamente la propria omosessualità con ironia e con un invito al mondo intero ad accettare ogni apparente diversità come qualcosa di assolutamente normale.

Alle soglie del nuovo millennio esce “Songs of the last century”, nel quale trovano posto brani che hanno segnato il ventesimo secolo riarrangiati con parti orchestrali.

Nei primi mesi del 2002, dopo anni di relativo silenzio discografico torna sulle scene con il singolo “Freeek!”, il cui video traboccante di nudità, scene sexy e depravazioni sessuali assortite scatena un putiferio tra i puritani del Regno Unito.

Anche nella politica George Michael ha “qualcosa da dire”: nel 2003 esce la canzone “Shoot the dog”, il cui videoclip a cartoni animati vede come protagonisti gli “amanti” d’eccezione, George W. Bush e Tony Blair. Compaiono anche la signora Blair, Saddam Hussein e… i missili americani.

Cambia nuovamente etichetta e dopo la Universal, il cantante torna in Sony. Fa slittare la pubblicazione dell’album che esce nel 2004: “Patience”, anticipato dal singolo “Amazing”.

Nel 2006 torna con un nuovo singolo (“An easier affair”) e un nuovo tour mondiale. Nel maggio 2011 annuncia il Symphonica Tour, un tour mondiale con un’orchestra sinfonica. Pochi mesi dopo, il 21 novembre, viene ricoverato a Vienna a causa di una grave forma di polmonite. Torna ad esibirsi durante la cerimonia di chiusura delle Olimpiadi di Londra 2012, cantando “Freedom e White Light”.

Il 4 settembre 2012 riprende il tour Symphonica Tour a Vienna, dove, nell’occasione, dedica il concerto a tutto lo staff medico che 9 mesi prima gli aveva salvato la vita. Tuttavia in seguito annulla le date australiane a causa dell’affaticamento e stress dovuti al non perfetto recupero dalla grave malattia dell’anno precedente.

Nel 2014 ritorna sulla scena musicale con un nuovo album, “Symphonica”, che contiene tutti i grandi successi di George Michael eseguiti durante i concerti del Symphonica Tour.

A soli 53 anni, muore improvvisamente il giorno di Natale, 25 dicembre 2016, a causa di un infarto, nella sua casa di Goring-on-Thames.

Nella sua carriera da Art Director, ha diretto Televisioni,Radio,Magazine,Teatri, e grandi Star della Musica e dello Spettacolo, tra cui la Pop Star Inglese Boy George,per il suo Tour Mondiale negli anni 90", la vincitrice di The Voice of Italy Sister Cristina, e altri artisti come : Franco Simone, Teo Mammuccari, Fabrizio Frizzi, Antonella Ponziani, Claudia Koll...
