La grattachecca è un alimento rinfrescante tipico della città di Roma. Molti romani la consumano durante le giornate estive e le calde serate romane.

La gratta-checca viene preparata direttamente da una lastra di ghiaccio dalla quale si “gratta” a neve e poi vengono aggiunti uno o più sciroppi (menta, orzata, cocco, limone, amarena, tamarindo …) e/o pezzi di frutta.

Grattachecca_RomaIl suo nome viene dal verbo grattare e da checca, termine con il quale un tempo si identificava il grosso blocco di ghiaccio utilizzato per refrigerare gli alimenti quando ancora non esistevano i frigoriferi. A differenza della granita che viene prodotta con acqua mescolata a sciroppi o succhi e messa a congelare, la grattachecca è composta da ghiaccio grattato da un singolo blocco di grandi dimensioni, anche fino a un metro di lunghezza (più è lungo il blocco di ghiaccio meglio è), con un apposito raschietto provvisto di una camera posteriore in cui si accumula il ghiaccio grattato.

A Roma solo pochi chioschi oramai preparano la grattachecca con ghiaccio grattato da un singolo blocco e non con cubetti di ghiaccio tritati. Vediamo ora i chioschi storici o più famosi a Roma:

Un chiosco storico che nel tempo è divenuta una vera istituzione della movida della calda estate romana. Sora Mirella si è spenta nel 2013 ed era considerata La “grattacheccara doc” de’ Noantri.  Il chiosco alle porte di Trastevere, propio di fronte all’isola tiberina, da oltre cinquant’anni si gratta ghiaccio per elaborare cocktails di frutta e creatività.

Il posto è molto frequentato sia da romani che da turisti. Sicuramente questo kiosk è tra i più antichi della città, le sue specialità sono le grattachecche con pezzi di frutta fresca o la piu’ gettonata LemonCocco. 

I prezzi non sono troppo alti se si pensa che il chiosco si triva in pieno centro storico.

Costi: da 3 euro per il classico Lemoncocco a 6 euro per le grattachecche alcoliche.

Probabilmente il più antico chiosco di grattachecche ancora in attività a Roma, alcune fonti datano l’apertura al 1913. Sempre molto affollato offre ghiaccio e sciroppi che rinfrescano a tutte le ore.

I prezzi sono nella media del centro storico: 3 euro la grattachecca normale, 5 euro quella con aggiunta di alcohol.

Un piccolo e anonimo chioschetto in mezzo al quartiere Testaccio è in realtà il vero re del Lemoncocco, la grattachecca condita con limone (in questo caso vero succo di limone spremuto al momento) e sciroppo di cocco. Altre specialità: arancia e tamarindo e amarena. Su richiesta piccoli pezzetti di frutta fresca e visciole nel bicchiere. Prezzi: 4 euro una grattachecca media.

Il Chiosto di grattachecca della Sora Maria al Trionfale e’ un’istituzione. Purtroppo non è proprio una grattachecca tradizionale in quanto  il ghiaccio non viene grattato a mano come una volta e quindi non avrete l’effetto neve.  La preparazione e’ attenta ma moderna ad esempio e il limone viene spremuto e poi fatto a pezzetti nell’apposita macchinetta.

Pochi turisti, tanti abitanti accaldati del quartiere a frequentare questo chiosco stagionale del Tuscolano. Dal 1930, è il chioschetto  storico di via Magnagrecia nel quartiere dell’Appio Latino, tra la Coin e via Sannio, dove tutti gli abitanti nel quartiere lo conoscono .

La tipica “grattachecca” alla romana, preparata con ghiaccio ancora grattato a mano sul momento la preparano al limoncello, alla sambuca, alla vodka e alla macedonia. Aperto fino a tarda notte …
