A 250 anni dalla morte di Canaletto Roma celebra il grande pittore veneziano del ‘700, con la più importante mostra monografica in Italia a lui dedicata presso il Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi a Piazza Navona.

Giovanni Antonio Canal (Venezia 1697 -1768), ha lasciato il segno nella storia della pittura europea soprattutto per le sue vedute, fino a quel momento considerate un genere pittorico secondario. Vissuto prima della nascita della fotografia ha impresso sulle tele la prospettiva dal vivo, forte delle esperienze scenografiche teatrali e delle recenti conoscenze scientifiche nel campo dell’ottica in un mix di naturale e creativo. Ha usato una tecnica che ha valorizzato il gioco di ombre, luci e colori, testimone dell’epoca dei lumi e del “Grand Tour”. Questa esposizione ne ripropone l’evoluzione e l’atmosfera.

Canaletto 1697-1768: la più importante mostra in Italia
La mostra , che intende svelare la genesi delle creazioni dell’artista attraverso un dossier della sua personalità e creatività, comprende 42 dipinti, inclusi alcuni celebri capolavori, 9 disegni e 16 libri e documenti d’archivio. Sono otto le sezioni che raccontano la sua intera parabola come pittore e disegnatore nelle diverse fasi tecniche e stilistiche: dalla maniera libera e drammatica delle prime opere – sulle quali si è posto un accento particolare – alle immagini più affascinanti di Venezia e a quelle eleganti del soggiorno di nove anni in Inghilterra, fino ai tardi, sofisticati “capricci”. Altro tema ricorrente in mostra è l’indagine sul collezionismo delle sue opere. Si evidenzia il suo rapporto con il teatro, il capriccio archeologico ispirato alle rovine dell’antica Roma, gli anni d’oro, il rapporto con i suoi collaboratori e l’atelier.

I suoi capolavori
Tra i capolavori in mostra, oltre al Bucintoro di ritorno al Molo il giorno dell’Ascensione del Museo Pushkin, spiccano due opere della Pinacoteca Gianni e Marella Agnelli di Torino: Il Canal Grande da nord, verso il ponte di Rialto, e Il Canal Grande con Santa Maria della Carità, esposti per la prima volta assieme al manoscritto della Biblioteca Statale di Lucca che ne illustra le circostanze della commissione e della realizzazione.
Tra i dipinti vanno menzionate le due parti di un’unica, ampia tela, raffigurante Chelsea da Battersea Reach, tagliata prima del 1802 e riunita in questa mostra per la prima volta. La parte sinistra proviene da Blickling Hall, National Trust, Regno Unito, quella destra dal Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes de la Habana, eccezionalmente concessa in prestito dal governo cubano.

I disegni preparatori ci permettono di scorgere l’artista fin da dietro le quinte. Si intravede così la sua capacità di catturare la realtà e di trasformarla con la fantasia, facendo dissolvere l’immagine stereotipata di “Canaletto fotografo”.

Canaletto artista
Un uomo dedito alla pittura e alla scultura, contemporaneo del Tiepolo e di Winkelman, ha vissuto per lo più a Venezia, Roma e Londra, grazie alle opere commissionate dagli ambasciatori e magnati stranieri in visita in Italia e desiderosi di portarsi a casa un ricordo del “bel paese”. Dettagli architettonici e di vita quotidiana sono i souvenir che approderanno nelle più importanti sedi museali di tutto il mondo (Boston, Cincinnati, Mosca, L’Avana), che per l’occasione hanno prestato alcuni dei capolavori affinché potessero tornare momentaneamente in Italia.
Si reca a Roma per la prima volta nel 1719, ancora insieme al padre, dove lavora a scenografie teatrali, ma cominciò però a provare insofferenza per il teatro. A Roma trovò bei soggetti, soprattutto le antichità, ed ebbe l’opportunità di apprezzare i lavori di importanti vedutisti dell’epoca.
Tornato a Venezia nel 1720, Canaletto porta con sé la visione delle vestigia della città eterna che andrà poi a innestare, nella sua produzione successiva, in quei capricci dove la realtà oggettiva, resa con scientifico rigore per via dell’utilizzo della camera ottica, si fonde con il fascino dell’immaginazione, come i comignoli veneziani sui tetti di Roma.
L’aria brumosa della del primo vedutismo lagunare veneziano, si alleggerisce, per arrivare verso una luminosità più schietta, complice anche la diffusione delle teorie di Newton sulla luce e sulla scomposizione dei colori. Negli anni trenta l’atmosfera che accoglie le vedute, i dettagli architettonici, la vita quotidiana e i grandi eventi è di una trasparenza quasi cristallina.

Merita una nota a parte il Palazzo Braschi, che ospita la collezione del Museo di Roma, con un suggestivo affaccio su Piazza Navona. Completamente rinnovato nell’allestimento che favorisce un’ottima fruizione delle opere esposte documenta la storia di Roma con quadri, reperti, opere grafiche e fotografie dal Seicento al Novecento. Di particolare interesse la ricostruzione video/fotografica dei lavori di urbanizzazione del ventennio che hanno dato vita alle attuali Via della Conciliazione e Via del Mare.
