Proprio a due passi da Piazza Navona e da Palazzo Madama, sede del Senato della Repubblica, questa piazza prende il suo nome dalla chiesa e dal palazzo di S.Apollinare ed è nota anche per il Palazzo Altemps, già Palazzo Riario, un edificio storico di Roma che ospita attualmente una delle quattro sedi del Museo nazionale romano.

Palazzo Altemps fu costruito alla fine del 1480 per il nipote di Papa Sisto IV, Girolamo Riario, Generale di Santa Romana Chiesa. La facciata è a tre piani con bugnatura marcata agli spigoli e nelle lesene del portale ad arco situato in via di S.Apollinare. A metà circa del Cinquecento il palazzo passò al cardinale di Volterra Francesco Soderini e nel 1568 fu acquistato dal cardinale Marco Sittico Altemps, nipote di Pio IV e figlio del conte Wolfango Altemps.

Il Palazzo di Sant’Apollinare, probabilmente già esistente alla fine del Duecento,  di Roma lega la sua storia all’attigua chiesa di Sant’ Apollinare (prima metà del VII sec).  Era utilizzato come abitazione del clero della chiesa. Il Palazzo di Sant’Apollinare fu dal XIV al XVI secolo residenza di cardinali, tra cui Napoleone Orsini (intorno al 1308), Pietro di Luna (poi antipapa Benedetto XIII, 1394-1423), Branda Castiglioni, Guglielmo d’Estouteville. Nel 1495 vi dimorò il siniscalco Belcari. Il cardinal Branda nel 1424, vi fondò un collegio destinato ad ospitare gli studenti dell’Università romana. Nella seconda metà del Cinquecento passò ai Gesuiti del Collegio Germanico Ungarico.

Nel gennaio 1574, Gregorio XIII concesse la struttura ai gesuiti come sede del Collegio Germanico (cui nel 1580 si unì l’Ungarico). I gesuiti tennero il complesso (palazzo e basilica) fino al 1773. Tra le attività formative del Collegio ebbe particolare risalto la musica, dando vita a una solida tradizione musicale.

Durante la dominazione francese nel 1811 Napoleone I vi trasferì le scuole dell’Accademia di San Luca. Nel 1825 Leone XII assegnò il Palazzo al Pontificio Seminario Romano. Nel 1849, durante la Repubblica Romana, l’Apollinare fu per un breve periodo sede del Ministero delle Finanze.

Nel 1853 Pio IX costruì la vasta Sala di lettura sopra la Basilica, oggi denominata Aula Card. J. Höffner,  ed aggiunse all’edificio due piani ad uso del Seminario Pio. Nel 1920 vi si stabilirono i Padri Lazzaristi. Benedetto XV lo fece diventare sede del Pontificio Istituto di Sant’Apollinare.

Nella storia più recente sono stati ubicati in questo Palazzo l’Accademia di Musica “Tommaso da Vittoria”, il Circolo di San Pietro, i Padri Bianchi (Missionari d’Africa) ed altre benemerite istituzioni ecclesiastiche. A partire dal 1990, il Palazzo è sede della Pontificia Università della Santa Croce.

Nell’antica biblioteca del collegio Germanico-Ungarico, trasformata poi in Cappella al primo piano del Palazzo, si trovano un soffitto dipinto a tempera con l’incoronazione di Maria e un quadro dell’Immacolata, attribuiti ad Andrea Pozzo.  Fonte www.pusc.it/info/le-sedi/palazzo-santa-apollinare

Abbiamo cenato in questo ristorante, in piazza nei tavoli all’aperto in una mite giornata pre estiva. Il ristorante è stato da poco rinnovato dai nuovi proprietari. Il menu è attento a tutte le esigenze, dalla carne al pesce alla pizza lievitata alla vecchia maniera. Non si tratta solo di un luogo per turisti, che rappresentano in ogni caso la maggioranza degli ospiti. La qualità delle portate è garantita dalle ricette  dello chef Arcangelo Dandini.

Nelle belle giornate si mangia in piazza e non mancano i piatti storici della tradizione romana che sono rivisitati con una certa maestria ed eleganza. Non si tratta di un posto economico ma neppure possiamo consideralo caro vista la posizione il rapporto di qualità.
