Gli antichi Romani erano di religione pagana per i primi 300 anni di esistenza del cristianesimo. Infatti il cristianesimo ha assunto diverse feste pagane, soprattutto quando le date di alcune festività cristiane concidevano.

“Io Saturnalia!”: Duemila anni fa questo era il saluto usaro al posto del nostro moderno “Buon Natale”.

Quasi tutti gli aspetti legati alla festa del Natale hanno radici nella tradizione Antica Romana e nella religione pagana.  È probabile che le prime celebrazioni del Natale furono quindi in reazione ai Saturnali Romani, la festa del raccolto che segnava il solstizio dell’inverno (il ritorno del sole) e onorava prorio Saturno, considerato dai romani il dio dell’agricoltura.
I Saturnali erano un periodo caratterizzato da feste e da molto rumore, e spesso mal visto dall’allora cristianatà, che si trovava ancora minoranza. Molti storici  sostengono che il Natale si sviluppò in seguito come un modo indolore per sostituire l’adorazione del sole con l’adorazione del Figlio di Dio, Gesù Cristo.
Ma solo dopo il 529 d.C. l’imperatore Giustiniano fece del Natale una festa civile.
La religione cristiana esce dall’illegalità molti anni prima, quando Il 30 aprile el 311 d.C , a Nicomedia, anche a nome di Costantino e di Licinio, Galerio pubblica un editto con il quale si concede ai Cristiani la libertà di culto e la riedificazione delle chiese. Nel 391-392, nuovi decreti (“Decreti teodosiani”) inasprirono le proibizioni verso i culti pagani e i loro aderenti. Tali atti furono definiti da alcuni persecuzione del Paganesimo.
L’editto di Costantino, chiamato anche rescritto perché fortemente influenzato da quello di Galerio, aprì le porte di una nuova era storica che man mano si è sempre più rafforzata finché nel 380 d.C. l’imperatore Teodosio, con l’editto di Tessalonica, proclamò il cristianesimo religione di stato e riconobbe alle due sedi episcopali di Roma e Alessandria d’Egitto il primato in materia teologica.

Il 21 dicenbre si celebra il “Solstizio d’Inverno”, tra musica, parole e immagini e l’evocazione di antichi simboli dimenticati , dai Saturnali pagani al Natale cristiano.

  Il Natale rappresenta, oggi, una festività vissuta per Tradizione, nel senso più profondo di tale parola.
Sono giornate in cui si segue un copione, in parte simile per le varie famiglie, ed ogni famiglia ha le proprie usanze interne che con il tempo formano un campo di movimento – di gesti e di parole – che si cristallizza, viene recepito dalle giovani generazioni e, solitamente, sarà riprodotto acriticamente, o con qualche punta di riferimento fideistico che giustifichi meglio un cammino, letteralmente, rituale.
Quindi proprio in relazione alle radici pagane del Natale, l’incontro coglie l’occasione per una introduzione che esaminerà la festività più importante del calendario romano pagano, ossia i Saturnali, giorni dedicati nel mese di dicembre, al dio Saturno, antichissima divinità esule nel Lazio, che porterà l’età dell’Oro alle genti che lo accoglieranno, alle quali, in qualità di dio sator, lascerà l’eredità della agricoltura e della produttività, simboleggiati dal suo attributo rappresentato dal falcetto.
Sono giorni in cui si osserva il fenomeno astronomico del Solstizio d’Inverno, momento in cui l’umanità temeva il buio cosmico ed esorcizzava con l’attesa della Luce Solare, attraverso l’uso di accendere ceri nella notte più lunga dell’anno. Il ritorno del Sole costituiva un ritorno simbolico del dio Saturno ma anche la nascita del Sole Invitto del culto mitraico.

Si tratta la nascita della festività con i relativi rituali ad essa correlati, che genereranno un culto assai radicato nel mondo romano fino all’età tardoantica, momento nel quale la sovrapposizione cristiana tenderà ad una voluta coincidenza sia dal punto di vista calendariale quanto soprattutto da una coincidenza di ritualità e tradizioni che a tutt’oggi restano immutate.

    However, what about this? suppose you typed a catchier title?
    I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your blog, but
    what if you added a title to possibly grab folk’s attention? I mean WINTER SOLSTICE DECEMBER 21st – Rome Central city on the web is a
    little vanilla. You might peek at Yahoo’s front page and watch how they write article titles to get people interested.
    You might add a video or a related picture or two to get readers excited about what you’ve got to say.
    Just my opinion, it would make your posts a little livelier.
