Un’epoca raccontata attraverso una pista da ballo” è il titolo dell’ultimo libro uscito dalla penna di Osvaldo Sponzilli. Un omaggio al suo amico Walter Santinelli, maestro di ballo di antica tradizione famigliare.
Un viaggio attraverso la storia di Roma dal 1932 ad oggi: la biografia di una famiglia di ballerini, che ha fatto conoscere il ballo in ogni angolo d’Italia.
Roma che ora viene vista come una città per ricchi, attraverso i secoli è stata sempre una città di poveri, se escludiamo il papato e le grandi famiglie nobiliari. La vita si svolgeva tra i Borghi ed i Rioni, di qua verso San Pietro i borghi occupavano lo spazio tra Castel Sant’Angelo e l’Area Vaticana, di là del Tevere i Rioni.
La nostra storia inizia proprio nei borghi di San Pietro a Spina di Borgo, quell’area che il Ventennio Fascista demolì per fare spazio a via della Conciliazione. Lì nella Spina e precisamente in piazza Scossacavalli nacque il protagonista della nostra storia: Walter. Obbligato ad andarsene con i suoi genitori in spostamenti continui tra Torpignattara, Trastevere, via dei Coronari fino a via Ennio Quirino Visconti.
Si alternano alla biografia le storie dei vari angoli di Roma: aree medioevali come la zona del teatro di Marcello le cui arcate inferiori furono sede di botteghe artigiane di vari generi alimentari. Anche quell’area fu abbattuta, scomparvero caseggiati e chiese medioevali, che nascondevano alla vista il Teatro. Così i romani lo poterono apprezzare: per molti era stato sconosciuto. Sparirono però via della Bufola, l’Arco dei Saponari, vicolo della Campana, Monte Caprino, via Tor de’ Specchi, S. Maria in Vincis e piazza Montanari.
La storia di Roma si fonde nel libro con quella di Walter Santinelli e di suo padre Antonio che dopo tante disavventure approdano, durante la guerra, a via Ennio Quirino Visconti e ben presto trasformano parte della loro casa in scuola di ballo.

È la storia di “Er Ciriola” locale da ballo con spiaggia sul Tevere sotto Castel Sant’Angelo che fu teatro dei film del dopoguerra.
In una cornice di altri tempi, scampagnate in bicicletta attraverso la neonata via del Mare fino alla pineta di Ostia dove al suono di un violino si improvvisavano passi di ballo ed insegnamenti al piccolo Walter. Non mancano descrizioni di angoli di Roma scomparsi come il ponte del soldino così denominato, perché si pagava un soldo, ovvero cinque centesimi, per attraversarlo.
Nella sua biografia Walter, che il fascismo per la legge sui nomi aveva trasformato in Gualtiero, narra il linciaggio del direttore delle carceri di Regina Coeli avvenuta davanti ai suoi occhi di ragazzo nell’immediato dopo guerra.
Personaggi del passato come Renato Rascel, Ugo Gregoretti, Alberto Sordi, Pietro Germi, Monica Vitti, Michelangelo Antonioni ed attuali come Lino Banfi, Elena Sofia Ricci, Milena Vukotic, Beatrice Fazi, Luca Angioletti attraversano le pagine del romanzo.
I corsi di ballo per corrispondenza che Antonio Santinelli brevetta aprono il mondo del ballo a tantissimi italiani anche in paesini sperduti.
La scuola ufficiale di ballo a Roma dell’immediato dopoguerra nell’area di piazza Vittorio coinvolge l’intera famiglia Santinelli le cui memorie sono nei filmati degli archivi della RAI.
La prima scuola del giovane Walter a Cola di Rienzo, poi a viale Mazzini, a Val Favara e a via Medaglie d’oro fino alla Santinelli Dance Accademy fondata dalle figlie, più volte coreografe per la televisione.
Il romanzo da Roma si sposta a Parigi nel mondo di Toulouse Lautrec, a Londra e Germania per i campionati mondiali di ballo.
Squarci di storia che attraversano il mondo della rivoluzione studentesca del ‘68 fino al Travoltismo del ’78.
Anche oggetti simbolo del progresso tecnologico italiano entrano nel racconto con la Vespa, la Lambretta e la mitica Olivetti lettera 22.
La vita dei Santinelli entra nel mondo della cinematografia con la preparazione degli attori nel Paziente Inglese, i Predoni del Sahara, Lisa dagli occhi blu, Delitto sull’autostrada e tanti altri; nelle fiction televisive il “Medico in Famiglia”, “Tutti pazzi per amore”, “Don Matteo” “I Cesaroni”.
Un romanzo biografico da leggere tutto di un fiato in cui il racconto si alterna alla narrazione storica ed in cui anche l’autore qua e là entra in gioco per avvenimenti che hanno incrociato la vita del Maestro Walter Santinelli.
Completa il libro un’ampia appendice con la storia dei balli dalle origini ai nostri giorni, le federazioni ed associazioni italiane di ballo e una serie di immagini risalenti agli anni ’50 con le tavole dei corsi per corrispondenza di Antonio Santinelli.
