Quattro giorni di grande musica al Rufus Thomas Park, tra headliner internazionali, premi alla carriera e la consueta atmosfera di festa che ogni anno trasforma Porretta nella capitale europea del soul.

La trentottesima edizione del Porretta Soul Festival, in scena dal 23 al 26 luglio al Rufus Thomas Park, si è conclusa da poco e il bilancio è senz’altro positivo: artisti di altissimo livello, grande successo di pubblico, organizzazione impeccabile e, perché no, un meteo che ha consentito il regolare svolgimento di tutte le serate.

Per definire la line-up della kermesse, lo scorso ottobre lo storico direttore artistico e ideatore del festival, Graziano Uliani, si è recato personalmente a Memphis per selezionare gli artisti da portare sul palco di Porretta, e in quell’occasione ha ricevuto il Legacy Award della Memphis Music Hall of Fame, riconoscimento al suo impegno quasi quarantennale nel mantenere viva in Europa la tradizione del “Memphis Sound”.

In questi giorni, a Porretta, l’atmosfera soul si respira ovunque: nei murales dedicati alle leggende del genere, sparsi un po’ in tutto il paese; nella musica diffusa a tutte le ore grazie all’esibizione di una ventina di band italiane sul palco allestito in Piazza della Libertà; nei sound-check aperti al pubblico; nell’itinerante Oversoul Street Band, che ha portato le sue note per le vie del paese; e nell’immancabile Bluesmobile — la Dodge Monaco del 1974, riproduzione perfetta di quella guidata da Jake ed Elwood Blues nel celebre film, portata ogni anno a Porretta da Erwin Siesling — soggetto fisso di foto e selfie. Anche le numerose t-shirt del festival indossate dagli ospiti (la nuova grafica 2026 è particolarmente apprezzata) hanno contribuito a diffondere questa atmosfera speciale.

L’edizione 2026 è stata anche l’occasione per la riapertura al pubblico, dopo oltre vent’anni di abbandono, della piazzetta Liberty delle Terme Alte, cornice del tradizionale concerto gospel della domenica mattina, affidato quest’anno al Revelation Gospel Choir diretto da Lorenza Catricalà.

Come sin dalle prime edizioni del festival, anche quest’anno il compito di mattatore e presentatore delle serate è stato affidato a Rick Hutton, che con la sua consueta simpatia, bravura e passione ha condotto in maniera esemplare le quattro serate.

Confermata anche la house band, la Memphis Music Hall of Fame All Star Band: dodici musicisti versatili e di grande talento che, sotto la direzione di Kurt “KC” Clayton, hanno fornito supporto musicale e coristico agli artisti in programma.

Questa una rapida carrellata delle lunghe serate in musica:

Giovedì 23 luglio: si apre con The Özdemirs e Curtis Salgado

The Özdemirs: la rinomata house band europea di riferimento per le star americane (per l’occasione orfana del bassista Erkan, bloccato in Germania, ma arricchita dalle tastiere di Alberto Marsico, dalla tromba di Christian Altehülshorst e dal sax di Diego Borotti) ha aperto la kermesse con il suo groove old school, facendo anche da motore ritmico per diversi set. Durante il loro show c’è stato spazio per una fugace anticipazione di Tad Robinson.

Mitch Woods & Bononia Sound Machine: un connubio esplosivo tra il pianismo boogie-woogie e jump blues del virtuoso newyorkese Mitch Woods e la potenza della celebre big band bolognese di 12 elementi fondata da Lorenzo Bombacini. A completare lo show sono state le coreografie acrobatiche dei ballerini dell’associazione MoveT di Reggio Emilia.

Sandy Carroll: la cantautrice e pianista del Tennessee, legata a doppio filo alla storia di Memphis e della Sun Records, ha proposto un raffinato mix di soul, blues e country accompagnata dalla Memphis Music Hall of Fame Band e dal coro delle Jewels.

Curtis Salgado & Soul Shot Band: leggenda dell’armonica e voce graffiante (l’artista che ispirò John Belushi per la nascita dei Blues Brothers), Salgado ha infiammato l’arena assieme alla formazione del New England in uno show ad altissima tensione emotiva.

 

Venerdì 24 luglio: Eric Gales e la sorpresa Dot. Moore

Tad Robinson & The Özdemirs: il crooner di Chicago, dieci nomination ai Blues Music Awards, ha incantato i puristi con ballad intense e viscerali assoli d’armonica.

Memphis Music Hall of Fame Band & The Jewels: la house band guidata da Kurt Clayton e il grandioso ensemble di vocalist soliste, The Jewels, hanno entusiasmato la piazza con potenti riletture dei classici del soul. La band ha poi supportato gli artisti alternatisi sul palco in tutte le giornate del festival.

Eric Gales, considerato da Joe Bonamassa “il miglior chitarrista al mondo”, è stato sicuramente uno degli artisti più attesi a Porretta. L’artista di Memphis, visibilmente commosso nel ricordare il fratello Manuel — in arte Little Jimmy King, chitarrista blues scomparso nel 2002 — ha dimostrato una forza di volontà straordinaria: nonostante problemi fisici che lo hanno costretto a suonare da seduto, ha incantato il parco con il suo stile unico da mancino “al contrario”, fondendo blues psichedelico, rock e sonorità gospel.

Dot. Moore: inserita in corsa nella line-up, la giovane voce del Tennessee ha conquistato la piazza grazie a un’estensione vocale straordinaria e a un’impronta gospel viscerale.
Bigg Robb: icona del southern soul ed erede del P-Funk di Roger Troutman, ha travolto il pubblico con l’uso del talkbox, ritmi travolgenti, abiti sfavillanti e tanta ironia.
Nel corso della serata è stato consegnato lo Sweet Soul Music Award 2026 a Jerry Phillips, per lo storico apporto della dinastia Phillips all’evoluzione della musica afroamericana. Phillips si è anche esibito dal vivo alla chitarra e alla voce.

Sabato 25 luglio: il grande Lenny Williams e il tributo ad Albhy Galuten

Thornetta Davis & ZBlues Band: la pluripremiata “regina del blues di Detroit”, affiancata dalla ZBlues Band guidata dal marito James Anderson e da una ricca sezione fiati, ha regalato una lezione d’interpretazione e presenza scenica.
Karen Wolfe: cresciuta al fianco di Denise LaSalle, l’artista ha portato sul palco una carica travolgente di southern soul-blues dai testi diretti e pungenti.

Lenny Williams: lo storico frontman dei Tower of Power, voce di classici come “So Very Hard to Go”, ha firmato uno dei momenti più intensi e storici dell’edizione, sfoggiando un’eleganza impeccabile e acuti ancora cristallini, accompagnato dall’orchestra di Memphis e dalle Jewels.
La serata ha visto la consegna dello Sweet Soul Music Legacy Award ad Albhy Galuten, produttore di fama mondiale noto per il suo lavoro con Bee Gees, Barbra Streisand ed Eric Clapton, e per la colonna sonora di “Saturday Night Fever”. Il riconoscimento ha inteso celebrare il suo fondamentale contributo, nell’ombra, alla definizione del sound moderno.

Domenica 26 luglio: la gran festa di chiusura con John Ellison
Come detto, la domenica mattina è dedicata al gospel: nella ritrovata piazzetta delle Terme Alte si è esibito, davanti a un numeroso pubblico, il Revelation Gospel Choir. Come da copione, la serata di chiusura del festival prevede un recap delle serate precedenti, con qualche eccezione: ad aprire è la banda itinerante Oversoul Streetband, seguita da John Ellison & The Carpenter Ants. L’ex leader dei Soul Brothers Six, autore nel 1967 dell’intramontabile “Some Kind of Wonderful”, elegantissimo in total white, insieme ai Carpenter Ants (Michael Lipton, Ted Harrison e James Willie Little Jr.) ha trascinato la piazza in una grande festa di strada tra funk, gospel e Appalachian roots.

A seguire, tutti i protagonisti delle serate precedenti tornano sul palco per un abbraccio finale con il pubblico, che per tutta la durata del festival li ha seguiti, applauditi, acclamati e ballato.

Un arrivederci al 2027

Tra le rassegne collaterali (Eventi Off e The Valley of Soul) e l’entusiasmo manifestato dagli stessi artisti internazionali per l’accoglienza ricevuta, la manifestazione si conferma un’eccellenza unica nel panorama dei festival europei.
L’appuntamento con la trentanovesima edizione è già fissato: dal 22 al 25 luglio 2027. Segnatelo in agenda!
