Proponiamo un serie di scatti sul set di Romanzo popolare, 1974, con Ugo Tognazzi, Ornella Muti e Michele Placido, regia di Mario Monicelli. Soggetto e sceneggiatura: Age, Scarpelli e lo stesso Monicelli.

“A livello tematico agiscono più spunti: l’emancipazione nei rapporti uomo-donna; l’omologazione nei comportamenti proletari; l’impatto nord-sud quindici anni dopo la grande emigrazione. Come nei soggetti più riusciti del trio Age-Scarpelli-Monicelli, l’amalgama è perfetto, e soprattutto non nuoce al tono generale di commedia che consente al film l’ormai abituale successo di pubblico.
In questo caso, inoltre, non si è
fatta una scelta di realismo perché i toni sono quelli, appunto, di un melodramma (come del resto denuncia lo stesso titolo e la canzone di Rosanna Fratello in funzione di leitmotiv): il realismo, se mai, è affidato ancora una volta a quella sorta di koiné linguistica usata dai protagonisti, che mescola cadenze lombarde, influssi meridionali, gerghi calcistico-sportivi. Non a caso, questo complesso linguaggio è stato creato con la consulenza di Beppe Viola e di Enzo Jannacci.

La Muti è «lanciata» come attrice di commedia, ruolo che la condurrà al definitivo successo, mentre Michele Placido rimane fisso nella sua parte di immigrato meridionale un po’ animalesco. Quanto a Tognazzi (il film era originariamente ambientato a Roma e pensato per Manfredi: la scelta di Tognazzí ha fatto sì che l’azione venisse spostata a Milano), Romanzo popolare cade all’apogeo della sua carriera, dopo che i personaggi dei film di Ferreri lo hanno fatto definitivamente accettare dalla critica. l’affresco di una classe operaia che esce dalla retorica (anche di sinistra) e che si avvia sulla strada dell’omologazione – come Pasolini va scrivendo
proprio in quel periodo – è perfettamente riuscito. Monicelli ritrova la freschezza delle sue opere migliori, e quella matrice «nazionale» e «popolare» che lo caratterizza più di ogni altro regista italiano.”

La storia di Giulio e Vincenzina. Lui è un maturo operaio metalmeccanico e sindacalista, lei una ragazza del sud che Giulio aveva tenuto a battesimo. Quando la ragazza sale al nord, i due si rincontrano e finiscono per sposarsi e avere un bambino. Ma poi Vincenzina si innamora del giovane poliziotto Giovanni, e Giulio la caccia con il figlio

Ambientazione del film

Molte scene del film (esterni-terrazzo e interni-6 piano scala C2) sono state girate nel caseggiato popolare della Nuova Torretta in via Antonio Maffi 112/C2 a Sesto San Giovanni.

Il paese dell’Avellinese di Montecagnano è immaginario. Il borgo riportato nella foto della rivista è in realtà Calcata in provincia di Viterbo. La bretella autostradale, narrata come esempio di opera pubblica inutile, è un tratto del raccordo Castel Madama con l’autostrada A24.

La scena del tradimento di Vicenzina e Giovanni è girata nel quartiere di Greco a Milano sulla salita di via Emilio De Marchi. Anche la scena del cinema è girata a Greco, cinema Abanella.
