Una partita di tennis è una relazione. Nel nuovo film di Luca Guadagnino, “Challengers”, il tennis è un provocante triangolo amoroso tra la coach, ex prodigio del tennis, Tashi Duncan (Zendaya) e i due tennisti Patrick (Josh O’ Connor) e Art (Mike Faist).

Tashi decide di iscrivere il marito Art Donaldson, fuoriclasse forgiato dal suo rigoroso coaching, ad un torneo Challenger per permettergli di riacquistare fiducia in sé dopo una serie di sconfitte che mettono in crisi la loro relazione professionale e personale. Art dovrà confrontarsi con Patrick Zweig, suo ex migliore amico nonché ex ragazzo di Tashi ai tempi del college, in un match in cui riverseranno tutta la complicità e gli asti passati.

Da questa premessa e da questa partita cardine, si dispiega un dramma sportivo audace ed elettrizzante che, come una pallina, rimbalza avanti ed indietro nel tempo tramite flashback che svelano le prevaricazioni e le ambizioni dei tre protagonisti. Malgrado non in campo, è Zendaya a sovrastare la scena interpretando una dominante e seducente Tashi. Per la coach ogni battuta è indirizzata verso la vittoria ed ogni conversazione incentrata sul tennis; anche quando non si parla veramente di sport, anche dopo l’infortunio che le costa la carriera da pro. Justin Kuritzkes inaugura un sodalizio con il regista Luca Guadagnino, debuttando nel cinema con la sua prima sceneggiatura, ma non senza imperfezioni. È infatti, purtroppo, solo accennato il discorso sull’etnia e la classe sociale, che, se approfondito, avrebbe potuto scavare più a fondo nel personaggio di Tashi.

Zendaya trova in “Challengers” lo spazio adatto per poter esplorare appieno il suo potenziale. Porta in Tashi dolore e frustrazione che smorzano la sua ostinatezza, redimendola, almeno parzialmente, da tradimenti e gioco sporco. La sua impeccabile performance viene saldamente accompagnata dal docile e svigorito Art. L’interpretazione di Mike Faist fa trasparire la stanchezza di anni spesi nel cercare di soddisfare le aspettative della moglie, conferendo spessore al personaggio. Josh O’Connor irriverente e squattrinato, è irresistibile nel ruolo di Patrick, in tutta la sua scorrettezza. Nei sorrisi ammiccanti è nascosto un egocentrismo sfacciato che si scontra con la tenacia della coach, di cui è ancora perdutamente innamorato, creando una chimica eccitante che trascende lo schermo. Una sensualità che si estende al suo rapporto con Faist, sulla linea di un omoerotismo alluso da gemiti in campo e banane addentate durante il tie break.

Sono giochi di sguardi a delineare le dinamiche fra i tre. Un tira e molla nell’arco di tredici anni, che a tratti risulta ridondante, considerata la lunghezza della pellicola. Malgrado questo, la tensione è alta e palpabile, amplificata da momenti slow-motion di muscoli tesi che ne catturano la frenesia del gioco. La fotografia di Sayombhu Mukdeeprom complimenta i copri atletici e ne adotta i punti di vista più sperimentali, fino a prendere la prospettiva di una pallina da tennis. Il montaggio spedito di Marco Costa coinvolge, e unito alla cura del sonoro trasporta lo spettatore al centro della scena: i battiti cardiaci a tempo con le battute dei tennisti.

Dispute al ritmo sintetico della techno si alternano a sconfitte coronate da canti angelici, creando un climax che non viene mai tradito fino all’ultima inquadratura. Il duo Reznor e Ross torna, dopo la collaborazione con Guadagnino per il precedente film “Bones and All”, a comporre una colonna musicale che rapisce e rimbambisce. Così il sudore degli atleti che inumidisce la lente sembra essere sostituito da quello dei raver sotto cassa.

Guadagnino sa come appassionare al tennis anche i più eretici, grazie ad un film cinetico che può essere considerato il suo migliore fino ad oggi, stilisticamente. Dinamico e divertente, giovane ed impudente. Un ottimo film sul tennis per i fan delle dirette sportive, un eccellente film sul desiderio per gli amanti del carnale.
