Per circa 20 anni , l’ Air Terminal di Roma Ostiense languiva in uno stato di abbandono accanto alle linee ferroviarie della Stazione Ostiense . Alcuni senzatetto avevano occupato il grande edificio di vetro che era rimasto vuoto. L’area circostante questo edificio è malconcia e alcuni potrebbero descriverla come squallida . Nel 2010 la grande catena di supermercati Eataly ha iniziato trasformare la struttura per aprire il suo  15 ° punto vendita . Il complesso è stato inaugurato nel mese di giugno 2012, e conta circa 170.000 metri quadrati dedicati al cibo e alla tradizione enogastronomica italiana.

Questo grande magazzino di Eataly contiene un enorme spazio , 18 punti di ristoro e caffè , una torrefazione per il caffè , una birreria e anche la sua propria agenzia di viaggi , il tutto in uno spazio di quattro piani che assomiglia ad un commerciale di lusso.

Visitare il punto vendita Eataly a Roma richiede un certo impegno . Il suo edificio tutto di vetro è abbastanza difficile da raggiungere . Abbastanza vicino alla stazione della Metropolitana Piramide , raggiungere Eataly lo si puo’ fare avventurandosi in un percorso a ostacoli, i marciapiedi sono malconci , ma nonostante la mancanza di segnaletica si arriva abbastanza facilmente al negozio . Chiedere ai residenti locali è sempre la migliore idea e vi possono guidare fino al centro commerciale , dove ci sono anche 600 posti auto , ma attenzione solo la prima ora di parcheggio è gratuita .

Entrando da Eataly dal parcheggio ci troviamo di fronte i registratori di cassa , sembra esserci anche una banca, un negozio di telefoni cellulari e un banco informazioni che ricorda molto i classici centri commerciali . Le scale mobili permettono ai visitatori di salire ai vari spazi sovrastanti e raggiungere punti di ristoro informali e bar e la Birreria , dove vengono anche create birre in loco. Una raffinata selezione di birre artigianali di qualità, oltre a una serie di marchi industriali , sono in vendita .

Eataly offre una combinazione di prodotti artigianali e di prodotti industriali di qualità in un modo che alcuni giornalisti hanno definito ” incoerente .” Spetta al consumatore infatti la capacità di decifrare che cosa è che cosa. Ottimi formaggi e salumi sono serviti nella Salumeria , mentre il pescivendolo vende sopratutto pesce locale . La ” Friggitoria ” serve pesce fritto e polpette in una specie di bancone che circonda una cucina aperta. Al piano terra troverete anche una costosa Piadina Romagnola,

Non è certamente un negozio economico, e i prezzi a volte sembrano eccessivi per un cittadino romano, ma per uno straniero e turista puo’ sembrare conveniente. Difficile per un visitatore comparare ,a d esempio, la frutta e la verdura venduta al piano terra con i prezzi dei tanti mercati rionali che affollano la città di Roma dove la qualità è sempre di livello. I Romani, spesso  acquistano vegetali e pietanze al mercato rionale (la mattina) sono soliti pagare anche molto meno del prezzo e sperano tutti che l’avvento di Eataly non faccia aumentare i prezzi dei negozi e mercati vicini.

In ogni caso è un posto meraviglioso dove migliaia di prodotti  confezionati ad arte vengono esposti in un ampio spazio con aria condizionata , un vero paradigma americano . Molti si son chiesti se Roma avesse bisogno di un Eataly, la risposta di molti è stata “Forse no” , ma a giudicare dalla folla che lo frequenta è sicuramente un posto da visitare.
