“A Tale of Love and Darkness” – The Oscar Award Natalie Portman at her first direction

A very strong family story, where the Oscar Award Natalie Portman is at her first direction. She is well known as an actress in many movies like Jackie and The Black Swan. It is based on the autobiographical novel”A Tale of Love and Darkness” by the Israelian writer Amos Oz. The movie, where Portman is also the writer, is the story of a family who lived in Jerusalem.
Their grown up son Amos tells their story to make clear his mother premature death’s mystery, very painful to him. Do not expect certain answers, but his own life rebuilding make him accept what happened.
Word is the protagonist and through Amos’s voice, as a child and as an adult, his mother Fania and his father Arieh they tell both the two life’s faces, the poetical and the dramatical one.
His own family’s and cultural identity love go together with human and history darkness. The audience swing between dream and reality, thoriugh a poetical view.
The key point is the birth of Israel. It was supposed to bring light, but it becomes a painful and dark beginning. It is an evidence that a dream must be untouchable not to lose his magical atmosphere, all the other things are real life.
Particular appreciation for the photography and the scenography of the movie, realistic and dreamlike at the same time. They make characters, setting and atmosphere very effective.
