It has come a long way since its foundations in the middle of the 20th century, the Games now featuring 4,350 athletes from more than 170 countries. Down the years, many great athletes have overcome disabilities to achieve outstanding sporting feats on a global scale, and the Paralympics truly celebrate all that is good and pure about sporting competition.
