Buddhism in Italy is the third most widespread religion, after Christianity and Islam. In Italy the largest Buddhist associations met in the year 2000 in the Italian Buddhist Union (UBI), joined the European Buddhist Union and included within it schools of different Buddhist traditions such as: Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna, Zen, Seon, founded in Milan in 1985 and recognized as a religious body by decree of the President of the Republic in 1991.
Soka Gakkai represents a new religious movement derived from the Japanese Nichiren Shōshū, he is not part of the UBI even though he is a member of the European Buddhist Union
The Buddhist presence in Italy begins in the 60s. In 1960 the Italian Buddhist Association was born in Florence. Subsequently, in 1967, the publication of the scientific Buddhism magazine begins. Vincenzo Piga places himself at the head of the Italian Buddhist Union (U.B.I.).
In 2000 the then Prime Minister Massimo D’Alema signed the Understanding between the Italian State and the U.B.I., even if it is not immediately ratified by the Italian Parliament, this signature officially confirms the growth of Italian Buddhism.
The Agreement between the Italian state and the Italian Buddhist Union was then ratified on 11 December 2012. The UBI was recognized as a religious body with legal personality and brings together the forty-four major Italian centers and their affiliates according to the Theravada traditions ( Southeast Asia) Mahayana (Far East), Vajrayana (Tibet) which support the practice and diffusion of historical spiritual teaching (Shakyamuni Buddha).
