Saint Maria Faustyna Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament, OLM, popularly spelled Faustina (born as Helena Kowalska; 25 August 1905 in Głogowiec – 5 October 1938 in Kraków, Poland[1]), was a Polish Roman Catholic nun and mystic. Her apparitions of Jesus Christ inspired the Roman Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy and earned her the title of Apostle of Divine Mercy. (Wikipedia)
To those who read this book, the “Diary of Sister Faustina”, it is essential that something changes in one’s life! It is a work that leaves in the reader a furrow so deep, that reaches the bowels of the soul!
In the Old Testament I sent my prophets the prophets with lightning. Today I send you to all of humanity with My Mercy (Diary 1588). Sister Faustina was elected by God to remind the world of the mystery of His mercy. The historical context in which God sent it with the prophetic mission of Mercy has its particular meaning. In the twentieth century the ideologies of evil were born and grew: Nazism and communism. It was, and still is, a time of incredible development of civilization and technique and also of profound moral fall, of the estrangement of man from God and of life lived “as if God did not exist”, on a level never encountered until now . In that context it became clear that sending a prophet to humanity at that time and reminding again the truth of God’s merciful love manifests itself as a great gift that is “a sign of the times”, “a light” that must illuminate the ways of man in the third millennium and arouse hope in his heart.
During the retreat in the convent, Sister Faustina, at first alone, obedient to the monastic rule, reflected on what God had done for man at the time of creation, how much the Son of God had suffered for the salvation of man, what he left for him in the Holy Church and what he had prepared for him in the glory of heaven. This knowledge of God’s merciful love by reflecting on his word, through the liturgy of the Church, in prayer and in the daily search for its manifestations in one’s life was strengthened by the infused gift of contemplation, thanks to which it was able to penetrate this mystery of our faith, to announce it to the contemporary world. On the orders of Jesus and the confessors she kept a diary in which she wrote everything that God made her know and that she told her during mystical experiences concerning her Mercy. His work – as the Holy Father Pope John Paul II affirmed – appears as a particular Gospel of Mercy written in the perspective of the twentieth century.
It is an exceptional work, not only because it was created on the basis of the mystical experience of Divine Mercy, but also because it contains original thoughts connected to this truth of faith. There are no quotes or comments in the “Diario” of the texts of the Holy Scriptures, but the truth transmitted therein on the Mercy of God and man – as noted by the bishop Kazimierz Romaniuk – which can be considered as a certain type of supplementary source for the (…) theology, enriching it in a meaningful way. What strikes everyone in the “Diary” is the fact of being fascinated by the merciful love of God, the Son and the Holy Spirit, by the greater attribute of the Creator and Savior as well as by the desire to bring Him to the world. Having such a great knowledge of the mystery of Divine Mercy, Sister Faustina defines mercy in a very lapidary way and at the same time grasps her essence in a very profound way when she writes: Mercy is a flower of love; God is Love and Mercy is His work, from Love is born and manifests itself in Mercy (Diary 651).
