18TH EDITION OF THE ‘PEM! FESTIVAL – WORDS AND MUSIC IN MONFERRATO’: THE PROGRAM

PAOLA TURCI, EUGENIO CESARO, MANUEL AGNELLI, GENE GNOCCHI, DITONELLAPIAGA, MATTEO BORDONE, GUIDO CATALANO, MAURO PAGANI, EMMA NOLDE AND MUCH MORE

FROM AUGUST 29 TO OCTOBER 8, 2023 as many as 18 EVENTS IN TEN COMMUNITIES OF THE TERRITORY, WITH THE ARTISTIC DIRECTION OF ENRICO DEREGIBUS

The “PeM! Festival – Words and Music in Monferrato” comes of age. What will kick off on August 29 will in fact be the 18th edition of the Piedmont festival of meetings, stories and songs. And eighteen will also be the events that until October 8 will take place in ten municipalities, starting with the lead municipality San Salvatore Monferrato, under the artistic direction of journalist Enrico Deregibus.

A varied billboard, all with free admission, touching on music but also literature, entertainment, and society. A look at art and culture in general. There will be notable personalities such as Gene Gnocchi, Paola Turci, Manuel Agnelli, Mauro Pagani, Matteo Bordone, Guido Catalano, Flaco Biondini; an event dedicated to the lesser-known Lucio Battisti, the one from the records with Pasquale Panella; a cult name such as Madreblu; a decided presence of artists from the new generations, with Eugenio Cesaro (Eugenio in Via Di Gioia), Ditonellapiaga, Emma Nolde and the two contests for young singers and writers from the province of Alessandria.

In the “PeM Music Contest” four finalists were selected, Camilla Baraggia, Carolina Piola, Linn and Filippo Repetto, who will compete on Sept. 20 at the Country Sport Village in Mirabello Monferrato. While for the “PeM Writing Contest,” curated by Riccardo Massola, the call for entries is still open, available online at www.pemfestival.it. The deadline is Sept. 10 and the award ceremony on Oct. 8 during the closing event of the festival, PeM’s traditional literary walk, which this year will be a tribute to Monferrato writer Rosetta Loy, who passed away in recent months, and who will also be remembered in an evening totally dedicated to her.

But also scheduled are the folk duo Filippo Gambetta and Fabio Vernizzi, the show between nature and technology “Conciorto” with Biagio Bagini and Gian Luigi Carlone and a meeting with music critic Marinella Venegoni.

A widespread festival that will make stops in San Salvatore Monferrato, Lu Cuccaro Monferrato, Balzola, Valenza, Mirabello Monferrato with the Country Sport Village, Alessandria, Pontestura, Rive and, new this year, Camagna Monferrato and the Pietra da Cantoni Ecomuseum with the municipality of Cella Monte. A route through the hills, rice fields and the Po River, in and around Monferrato, a UNESCO site, an hour from Turin, Milan and Genoa.

A unique event that focuses on the quality and originality of the proposal. The focus is on meetings/interviews with artists and intellectuals who, in the case of musicians, tell their stories by interspersing the words with a musical part. A kind of live journalism with entertainment.

On the evening of September 6 at the Country Sport Village with Emma Nolde there will be an important added value. Thanks to the collaboration of the Red Thread Committee, electricity will be supplied by hybrid bicycles used by spectators who wish to make their own contribution to the event and save energy.

Corrado Tagliabue, mayor of San Salvatore Monferrato, the lead municipality of the review, says, “Today we call it PeM! but its full name contains the word “Monferrato.” For those who, like me, believe in the territory and the synergies that can arise from the shared goal of enhancing this wonderful corner of the world, it means a great deal. When in 2006 with Riccardo Massola we started PeM we started from San Salvatore and already from the name the festival showed that it wanted to look far. So we involved many municipalities and together we created original opportunities for people to discover little-known and beautiful corners.

This year the festival launches an unprecedented literary “contest” for young debutants, in addition to the music contest born a year ago and welcomes two new member municipalities. PeM promises in its name what it proposes in reality: the beauty of words, the enchantment of music and the magic of new places to discover.”

Artistic director Enrico Deregibus says, “The 18 years of the festival corresponds to the edition with more adhering municipalities, ten, which testifies to the territory’s interest in what we are doing. To thank them for me is not only a duty but also and above all a pleasure, because they are almost exclusively the ones who support this festival, together with the Country Sport Village and, from this year, the Ecomuseum of Pietra da Cantoni.

As for the playbill, as has been the case for years now, very established names, particularly in music, are flanked by proposals of other kinds, which I particularly care about because I believe that the purpose of a festival like this should be to lead to the discovery of new things. And the many feedbacks I get from people who come to these evenings make me realize that the path is the right one.

But even with the better-known names, the mission is the same: to discover new aspects, to go beyond the commonplace, to offer food for thought. All thanks to a formula that could be summarized in the expression “live journalism,” live journalism, since the moments of entertainment are always flanked by interviews, insights, contextualizations. And I think the 18 events scheduled from this point of view are really pregnant.

The hope then is that they will also continue to raise awareness of this beautiful area of ours more and more.”

The festival has now become a point of reference in the Italian music and cultural scene, as evidenced by the attention of the national press and the artists and intellectuals who have participated, names such as Diodato, Arturo Brachetti, Malika Ayane, Morgan, Pilar Fogliati, Nada, Samuel, Enrico Ruggeri, Violante Placido, Ron, Zen Circus, Tosca, Luca Sofri, Franco Arminio, Motta, and Ghemon, Frankie hi-nrg mc, Luca Barbarossa, Irene Grandi, Guido Davico Bonino, Anita Caprioli, Fabio Troiano, Giovanni Truppi, Marina Rei, Vittorio De Scalzi, Carlo Massarini, Vasco Brondi, Francesco Bianconi of Baustelle, Ensi, Ernesto Ferrero, Paolo Benvegnù, Chiamamifaro, Rosetta Loy, Gianluigi Beccaria, Natalino Balasso, Paolo Bonfanti, Roberta Giallo, Marina Massironi, Davide Longo and many others.
