Maurizio Mistretta da oltre vent’anni è regista, sceneggiatore ed attore in diversi film, documentari e opere teatrali. Si è formato artisticamente prima a Bologna, poi a Pisa dove è stato direttore artistico di una compagnia di attori detenuti nel carcere Don Bosco di Pisa. Ha sviluppato progetti all’interno di scuole pubbliche e private in Italia e in Thailandia, campi profughi, carceri minorili e molto altro ancora. Attualmente vive la maggior parte del tempo a Bangkok dove ha fondato la sua casa di produzione All Soul Production ed è Direttore artistico del Festival del cinema italiano di Bangkok e dell’associazione Dante Alighieri.

Maurizio Mistretta ha collaborato con Sandro Calvani alla scrittura della sceneggiatura “Gaudium- La profezia della coca”, pubblicato dalla Bertoni Editore il 23 gennaio 2018. Dall’estate scorsa, Maurizio Mistretta è impegnato nelle riprese di alcune scene del film.

Abbiamo fatto a lui alcune domande per saperne di più di questa avvincente storia e sfidante progetto.

Il suo primo incontro con Sandro Calvani e Gaudium: cosa la ha colpito in questa storia?

Ci sono stati vari incontri preliminari con Sandro Calvani e nelle circostanze più svariate. In quasi tutte queste occasioni Sandro mi ha proposto l’idea di sviluppare un soggetto e scrivere una sceneggiatura su questo universo per me allora sconosciuto, che partiva e si sviluppava a partire dalla pianta della coca e la sua secolare storia nelle Ande. Finalmente ci siamo incontrati solo per parlare di questo progetto del quale non riuscivo ancora a cogliere le molteplici possibilità. Mi sono preso allora una settimana di tempo per capire meglio, con Sandro che mi portava materiali scientifici e storici. In lui c’era una fortesa richiesta che il prodotto finale avesse una portata ampia, arrivasse, con intelligenza, al maggior numero di persone possibile. Non c’era ancora nessuna storia, questa è la cosa che mi ha attratto di più, ma tante storie alcune reali ed appartenenti ad un passato storico fortemente evocativo per noi Italiani, altre meno visibili che si intrecciavano e modificavano le dinamiche globali, sino ad oggi. Dovevamo appunto solo scrivere la storia, ed è nato Gaudium.

Quale i punti di forza di questa produzione cinematografica dal suo punto di vista?

Io amo le storie con ricchezza di contenuti e finali non scritti. Questa è una storia che leggiamo tutti i giorni sui giornali, ma è iniziata 4,000 anni fa. Diciamo che sarà difficile fare annoiare lo spettatore e potremo tenerlo attaccato allo schermo per molto tempo, sia che il formato finale sia filmico che seriale. Se un film presenta delle caratteristiche del genere, è facile prevedere dei sequel addirittura in crescendo. Per la serie, se vogliamo, è anche più semplice.

Attualmente Gaudium è nelle mani di differenti case di produzioni internazionali. Ci dice quali le più interessate?

Abbiamo alcuni produttori Americani che stanno studiando la situazione. Tutti sono interessati ad un prodotto nuovo. Ma la diversità attira e respinge allo stesso tempo. Qui in Thailandia è più facile interagire con Hollywood, che usa spesso la Thailandia come location per alcuni film o parti di esso. Mi piacerebbe cominciare ad avere qualche riscontro anche dall’Europa, a partire dall’Italia dove, sulla carta, abbiamo da girare molto.

Avete girato già alcune scene, scelto attori e location. Ci spiega le motivazioni di queste sue scelte?

Poche settimane fa ci siamo ritrovati ad avere un piccolo budget a disposizione per girare alcune scene. Non volevo fare un trailer, come spesso si inizia, quando io penso che invece si dovrebbe finire. Allora ho scritto quattro scene per un teaser, che non sono neppure nelle sceneggiatura, e abbiamo cercato una location che ci permettesse di girare tutto in un giorno, volendo, comunque, girare con standard alti. È stata una simulazione ben riuscita, visto che abbiamo girato quasi 10 minuti in un giorno con attori spesso alla prima esperienza. La scelta della location è stata comunque la cosa più difficile e siamo stati fortunati che una casa di produzione locale ci ha organizzato la troupe a costi molto contenuti. Questo teaser comunque è stata possibile anche grazie alla bravura del direttore alla fotografia, Niccolò De la Fere, che è anche uno dei produttori di Gaudium

Lei vive fuori dall’Italia da parecchio tempo ed è un professionista nel settore da molti anni; ci dica quali secondo lei i limiti e le potenzialità della produzione cinematografica in Italia e le principali differenze con le opportunità che l’estero le ha dato e potrebbe riservare a Gaudium?

Faccio fatica a rispondere a questa domanda perchè sono venuto in Thailandia quando ancora si girava in pellicola. Non mi sono mai occupato di cinema in Italia se non per alcuni documentari che sono stati fatti su alcune mie operazioni teatrali abbastanza estreme, come il mio lavoro nel carcere di Pisa. Essendo una persona di teatro e vivendo in provincia, venire a contatto col mondo del cinema era molto problematico. In Thailandia ho continuato la mia attività teatrale, ma è stata proprio la comunità di attori locali (expat e Thai) che mi ha avvicinato a questo mondo essendo questo, per loro, una fonte di lavoro e di reddito. Il digitale, nel frattempo, ha fornito alcune facilitazioni per sperimentare la proprie potenzialità nel cimentarsi in questo nuovo linguaggio. Ho iniziato quasi per caso, ma devo dire che mi diverte molto e i risultati sono molto incoraggianti.
