In the heart of Rione Monti, Sunday, October 5th you can find out how to plant the paper that is used for ancient manuscripts, as it binds an old text, or explore the first cars from movies or modern devices for the restoration of photos and videos. To allow you to get to know the fascinating profession of restorer of literary works and films is the Institute for Restoration and Conservation of Archival and Book Heritage (Icrcpal),in via Milano, 76 – from 10:00 to 18:00 .
In that corner of the city where once there was the first botanical garden in Rome, you can spend a day of national event “Domenica di Carta 2014: la voce della storia e dei libri” which takes place during the project opening of the extraordinary Libraries and archival institutions.
The initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism wants to enhance the museums (with the statues and paintings), areas with archaeological finds precious, even the monuments of paper, a real asset equally impressive and rich, preserved in the archives and libraries. It is possible, therefore, to visit the State Archives, Archival Superintendent and State Public Libraries: a network of 46 State Public Libraries and 135 state archives that provide a special opportunity to visit the palaces and buildings of great architectural value – chests which houses manuscripts, documents, scrolls, books, newspapers, magazines, as well as drawings, prints, photographs, maps, engravings and pieces of great rarity – participating in guided tours, exhibitions, talks, screenings and musical and theatrical performances.
Kept inside dell’Icrcpal are old books and films’ 900 to see and observe, and you can rediscover forgotten crafts, participate in restoration workshops open to the public for the first time, as well as learn about the latest tools and software generation used for the preservation of the library, for the restoration of photos and videos, the last frontier of conservation of historical and cultural heritage of our country.
In the afternoon, the presentation of the recovery of the first Italian home movies in the scenes of the life of a Jewish family in the 20s, with a screening of the restored material and handover ceremony of the film reels at the Fondazione CDEC.
While in the garden of the Institute, throughout the day, there will be an exhibition of the artists and artisans of the historic district of the capital.
