L’amore per Roma è molto sentito in California tanto che è appena stata inaugurata una mostra intitolata “All Roads Lead to Rome” presso il museo dell’aeroporto internazionale di San Francisco negli Stati Uniti d’America. Si tratta di una mostra-installazione interamente dedicata alla capitale d’Italia che sta allietando la forte comunità italo americana unitamente ai tanti californiani con la passione per l’Italia e in particolare all’ Antica Roma.
SFO Museum è l’unico museo a fare parte dell’American Alliance of Museums, fondato nel 1980 per rendere più gradevoli le attese degli oltre 50 milioni di persone che transitano ogni anno in questo importantissimo hub aeroportuale.

Dal titolo “All Roads Lead to Rome“, l’aeroporto di San Francisco ospita fino al 13 agosto 2017 all’interno del suo museo una mostra con oltre 70 souvenir che risalgono al tempo dei “Grand Tour” viaggi che i facoltosi europei del XVII e XVIII secolo alla scoperta dell’Italia e le sue bellezze, in particolare quelle di Roma.

La mostra è Promossa dal Consolato Generale d’Italia a San Francisco, grazie ai prestiti concessi dalla galleria Piraneseum.

E’ difficile immaginare la civiltà occidentale moderna senza il contesto dell’antica Roma, la città eterna. Roma era la città più grande del mondo dal 100 AC al 400 DC circa, e il centro culturale e politico di un impero è durato più di un millennio. Al culmine del suo potere, Roma ha raggiunto una cifra stimata di settanta milioni di abitamti, più del 20% della popolazione mondiale. Il suo territorio comprendeva quasi cinquanta nazioni che abbiamo nel 21° secolo che devono la gran parte della loro cultura, religione, sistemi politici, e delle infrastrutture ai modelli romani. Probabilmente, Roma risuona più potentemente nelle sue forme architettoniche e nei suoi monumenti pubblici.

Visitare un altro paese per sola curiosità o turismo è un’idea relativamente moderna. Quando l’inglese Richard Lassels ha pubblicato un resoconto dei suoi viaggi in Italia nel 1670, viaggiare per scopi diversi da quelli di lavoro, pellegrinaggio religioso, o scopi militari era molto raro. Durante il 17 ° e 18 ° secolo, generazioni di ricchi giovani inglesi hanno seguito il consiglio Lassels  e tutti “i giovani signori” si sono messi in viaggio per il cosidetto “Grand Tour” per capire meglio il loro ruolo nel mondo.

I primi viaggiatori del Grand Tour hanno seguito un itinerario abbastanza standardizzato che partiva dall’Inghilterra attraverso la Francia e percorreva l’Italia fino al sud, e poi a nord attraverso i paesi di lingua tedesca e dei Paesi Bassi, prima di tornare a casa. Il viaggio erastato un rito di passaggio educativo che in genere durava un anno o più, con lunghi soggiorni a Parigi e Roma. I viaggiatori con fondi pressoché illimitati hanno raffinato le proprie competenze linguistiche, rafforzato le connessioni aristocratiche con le loro controparti continentali, e  spesso tornavano con busti in marmo, dipinti, stampe e altri reperti che rappresentano l’antichità classica e che venivano ammirato nei loro studi e biblioteche.Nel corso del 19 ° secolo, l’avvento di trasporto di massa ha reso il Grand Tour accessibile a un maggior numero di viaggiatori, compresi quelli che attraversano l’Oceano Atlantico. Nel 1868, l’autore Mark Twain ha pubblicizzato la sua “grande escursione di piacere europea” in una popolare serie di dispacci scritti per il giornale di San Francisco che ha sponsorizzato il suo viaggio. Il Grand Tour è diventato un fenomeno sempre più americano con Roma come tappa fondamentale per importanti scrittori, artisti, e aristocratici.

L’itinerario del Grand Tour si è evoluto. Molte delle opere e dei modelli della Collezione di Piranesi rappresentano dei documenti e punti di vista di ciò che esisteva nell’antichità. E alcuni dipinti rappresentano strutture di fantasia o combinano veri e propri monumenti con viste fantasiose. 

Tutti i souvenirs esposti trasmettono l’essenza della splendida architettura di Roma, e la grandezza senza tempo delle sue rovine.
