Garage Stills | J. M. Wessels | 18 december – 13 january | PAN | Napoli

After MIA Photo Fair Milan, Jacquie Maria Wessels comes back to Italy, in the South. In the PAN Palace of Arts in Naples, from 18th fo December ’21 to 13th of January ‘22, she presents the series Garage Stills, a photographic reportage surreal and at the meantime trenchant, punchy, whose alienating dimension documents of disappearing worlds. From the operating point of view Wessels makes a composition with the objects she finds in old car repair garages with which is succeeding to create magic still lives, captured with an analogue camera.

The old garages are men context to which she as a woman looks with careful. They have been made for progress but now are being overtaken by new technologies, where work is simplified but man presence is disappearing. marks this pressing passage of our industrialized society.

– Jacquie Maria Wessels lives and works in Amsterdam where she studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Social Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit. Wessels’ work is exhibited worldwide and is in the collection of various museums and private collections. Works of the Garage Stills series are included, as instance, in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Huis Marseille – Museum for Photography Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Wessels was invited to show her work at the Photography Festival Encontros da Imagem in Braga, Portugal. Recently, the series Cityscapes was on show in the ‘Photo Route Bijlmer Cityscapes + Birdmen’, an outdoor exhibition with 50 large format photographs in Amsterdam and in a solo show at the Surinaams Museum in Paramaribo, Suriname.
