Dog talents: top 10 Breeds with the Most Powerful Sense of Smell

All dogs have a powerful sense of smell.  There is no scent that will escape these masters of smell. Their nose is equipped with enhanced sensors that are able to capture tiny amounts of molecules.  This is our top list of the 10 most powerful scent dogs. 

  1. Black and Tan Coonhound

This one is a hunter with a strong persistence.  He will not let go of a trail, no matter what the terrain is like. They are fine dogs that make great companions and require regular exercise.

  1. Dachsund

These dogs were originally bred to hunt badgers.  They can follow a trail both above and under the ground.  Always eager and alert, they never back up from a hunt.  They have a happy personality that makes them great family pets. 

  1. Bluetick Coonhound

This breed was officially recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) only in 1986. The Bluetick Coonhound can find very faint scents.  It is a very determined dog that can follow trails in the most intricate tracks.  This one is the boss of coonhounds, although it is not as easy to train as the Black and Tan Coonhound.  His cold nose was designed to trail and tree raccoons.

Wherever the Beagle’s nose points at, that is where this pooch will go. The U.S. Customs & Border Patrol uses them to track down illegal substances. 

  1. German Shepherd

These are police and military dogs by excellence.  Their powerful sense of smell and easy trainability has made them form an important part of Law-enforcing agencies. 

  1. Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever makes excellent Search & Rescue and allergy alert dogs.  They are also used as guide and therapy dogs. 

  1. Labrador Retriever

The nose of the Labrador Retriever allows him to work on all types of detection work. They are trained to be Search & Rescue dogs. 

  1. Belgian Malinois

This one is very effective at detecting explosives.  It is a military dog.  Police and military agencies all over the world train them to detect drugs, bed bugs, and prostate cancer. 

  1. Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is a natural hunter and will instinctively follow any interesting scent.  It has a long endurance over harsh terrains. 

  1. Bloodhound

This fella is the authority when it comes to tracking and trailing.  Their powerful sense of smell comes from his rather large and wide open nostrils that allows him to trap even the most elusive particles.  They work with Law enforcement and their sense of smell is so accurate that courts of law have accepted it as evidence.

    Riguardo all’olfatto dei cani, come varia in base alla stagione e umidità dell’aria? Ci sono altri fattori che lo influenzano.

      Riguardo l’olfatto Probabilmente ci altri saranno altri fattori da tenere in considerazione, per esempio ciò che può condizionare è la varieta’ di odori del fondo del suolo, o in presenza di situazioni olfattive complesse, che aiuteranno il cane ad allenarsi. Probabilmente dipende anche dall’attività fisica del cane, ad esempio la ricerca del tartufo ha anche un aspetto molto fisico e un cane allenato e con elevata resistenza cerchera’ meglio e con maggiore capacita’, aspetti riguardano la forma complessiva del cane oltre al suo olfatto.
