Nel contesto della mostra Nero su Bianco 2015 l’American Academy in Rome presenta una serie di tre incontri di approfondimento sui temi affrontati nell’esposizione. E’ possible visitare la mostra dalle 16,00 alle 19,00.

L’American Academy ha deciso di andare più a fondo con il tema dell’afro discendenza dell’afro italianità , attraverso una rassegna che partirà l’ 11 giugno 2015 e che coinvolge diversi registi, designer, scrittori, storici dell’arte, stilisti in un programma di 5 incontri tutti a ingresso libero, che permetteranno di approfondire il tema dell’afro italianità.

Gli afro-americani a Roma nel dopoguerra: il caso di William Demby

Giovedì, 11 Giugno 2015 – 6:30pm presso AAR Lecture Room . American Academy | Via Masina, 5 – Roma 00153 

Il primo incontro è un racconto sulla presenza di intellettuali, attori e musicisti afro-americani a Roma nel secondo dopoguerra, arricchito da una video intervista ad un William Demby ormai anziano. Scrittore, critico d’arte, traduttore, attore e giornalista, Demby arrivò in Italia nel 1943, con gli Alleati. Si stabilì a Roma nel 1947, diventando immediatamente una figura preminente del dibattito culturale grazie alla pubblicazione del suo primo libro Beetlecreek nel 1950. Il suo romanzo sperimentale, The Catacombs (1965), esplorava la soggettività di un intellettuale Afro-Americano nel contesto internazionale. Amico di artisti e traduttore, occasionalmente attore a Cinecittà, Demby ha scritto della situazione postcoloniale nel Corno d’Africa, collaborando con Fellini o nella interpretazione della ricerca di artisti come Francesco Lo Savio e Mario Schifano.

A seguito della proiezione di estratti dalla video intervista a William Demby, introdotta dal Cofondatore e Direttore de “Lo Schermo d’Arte Film Festival”, Firenze, Silvia Lucchesi, lo storico dell’arte e critico Christian Caliandro porterà il pubblico nel racconto della comunità Afro-Americana che si è maggiormente distinta nella Roma del dopoguerra.

Un racconto sulla presenza di intellettuali, attori e musicisti afro-americani a Roma nel secondo dopoguerra, arricchito da una video intervista ad un anziano William Demby.

William Demby è uno scrittore, critico d’arte, traduttore, attore e giornalista, Demby che arrivò a Roma nel 1943, durante la guerra con gli Alleati. Tornò a Roma nel 1947 e divenne  una figura importantissima dell’ambiente culturale dopo la pubblicazione,  nel 1950, del suo libro Beetlecreek .

Col suo romanzo sperimentale, The Catacombs (1965), si esplorava la persolanilà dell’ intellettuale Afro-Americano in un contesto internazionale.

A Roma Demby frequentò sempre l’ambiente artistico e fu anche traduttore, e anche a  volte attore a Cinecittà, ha  anche collaborato con Federico Fellini e con artisti come Francesco Lo Savio e Mario Schifano.

Incontro tra gli scrittori Dasa Drndic, Nicola Lagioia,  e la poetessa e autrice nigeriana Lola Shoneyin il cui romanzo, The Secret Lives of Bana Segi’s Wives è stato traditto in italiano con il titolo Prudenti come serpenti (66thand2nd, 2012).

Carismatica cofondatrice (insieme a Patrisse Cullors e Opal Tometi) del movimento #BlackLivesMatter parlerà delle nuove forme di attivismo politico e sociale contro il razzismo in tutte le sue forme.

#BlackLivesMatter è un movimento americano nato nel 2013 in seguito all’assoluzione di George Zimmerman coinvolto nella sparatoria che portò alla morte di Trayvon Martin. Il movimento, nato innanzitutto come un hashtag, ha ricevuto attenzione dai media di tutto il mondo.

NOTA: I visitatori dell’American Academy in Rome sono pregati di mostrare un documento d’identitì all’ingresso.
