Luoghi indimenticabili e luoghi da dimenticare

Steve McCurry ha scattato foto dagli anni ’70, da quando clandestino, travestito da afghano, mimetizzato in un nucleo di mugiahdin ha iniziato a dar fondo alle centinaia di rullini che aveva portato con sé dagli Stati Uniti nel subcontinente indiano.

Da questi scatti sotto tiro, mentre i compagni del gruppo inforcavano cannocchiali e mirini della resistenza prosovietica, lui inforcava l’obiettivo.
È da questa esperienza di fotogiornalismo -la sua prima- di una guerra civile, e che gli fu proposta proprio dai combattenti islamici, che inizia la sua storia di fotografo documentarista che lo porterà poi a toccare le vette di una fama mondiale.McCurry nasce e cresce a Philadephia, e questo fu uno dei conflitti più significativi dell’era della Guerra Fredda. Le tensioni interne degli stati del nostro pianeta si trasformavano alchimicamente in guerre per procura tra le due superpotenze: l’uno fornisce le armi, l’altro invade e occupa militarmente il Paese. Stavolta toccava all’Afghanistan.
Delle sue infinite storie questa val la pena esser narrata se non altro in omaggio al coraggio del pensiero divergente, dell’esser persona uscita dalla comfort zone. Senza documenti, senza passaporto e attraversando una zona interdetta.
Durante questa esperienza McCurry in una lingua fatta solo di gesti e sguardi ritrasse ogni pensiero, di un Paese, dei miliziani, del contrasto tra misero armamento e ferrea determinazione.
La prima immagine consegnata al mondo da questa esperienza, impressa su di un rullino B&W che era riuscito a varcare ogni presidio e controllo di frontiera, fu pubblicata sul New York Times il 3 dicembre del ’79.

‘Oltre lo sguardo’ il titolo di questa mostra del fotografo McCurry, che si è riusciti a portare nuovamente e diversamente a Roma fino al 20 settembre 2015 ospite del Teatro 1 di Cinecittà in via Tuscolana 1055 dopo il gran successo della precedente e straordinaria installazione al MACRO di tre anni fa.
Lui ci ha insegnato sia l’incontro dello sguardo che la sua assenza, per vedere oltre.
Il pretesto di questa Mostra e della sua destinazione nasce con il suo colpo di fulmine surreale con gli Studi Cinematografici di Cinecittà alcuni anni fa, dove iniziò a muoversi tra set e magazzini ritraendo props e prospettive.

Il viaggio di questa mostra è perdersi e sorprendersi tra i pannelli di un labirinto storico-geografico di anime, di momentum, e avviene grazie ad una macchina del tempo, e dello spazio. Nonostante le sue tematiche e soggetti questa raccolta rimane un percorso rassicurante grazie anche al progetto di installazione di Peter Bottazzi, una rassegna di immagini che seleziona scatti fermi ma stratificati come se il vivere fosse una conformazione geologica.

Nella agilità e velocità del mezzo che McCurry ha preferito a quello cinematografico dei suoi studi universitari, fatto di tempi lunghi, lenti anche, attese, gruppi, troupe, ci tornano nella tridimensionalità delle sue immagini: il lavoro di un DoP, i suoi Punctum, le sue Massime.
Steve-McCurry_bigliettoCiò che colpisce di più di questa sua narrazione sono foto che non si fanno a destinazione, ma sul percorso, dal momento proprio in cui si decide di smarrirsi in stato quasi-meditativo, difatti lì non stai più forzando la situazione, la stai solo cogliendo. Ma, le devi saper riconoscere, quindi i suoi click sono i suoi ciak, di attesa ed anticipazione e, solo come Salgado ha, la capacità di donare movimento al paesaggio.

Se nella scorsa installazione fotografica McCurry a Roma ci ha consegnato una lezione di grammatica e sintassi della fotografia questa volta oltre a ciò ci da una lezione di vita:
lavorare con le persone sbagliate mette a repentaglio la tua stessa vita, non solo il risultato. Il rapporto di fiducia tra soggetti, dove l’altro la fiducia se la deve solo che guadagnare.
